Volvo Props

Just been told by Volvo agent that manufacturers fitting KAD 43 engines in boats were recommended in 2000 not to fit Volvo Alu props to 290 Dp drives but stainles ones as the Alu ones were shaking off the paint and some were bending slightly.

Advised to contact manifacture to have Alu ones replaced with S/S FOC.

Any one know anything about this?

Ah interesting Dom.
My new Sealine S37 with KAD43's came with SS props which I hadn't expected. Perhaps that is the reason.

My new (2002) boat with KAD43's came with Aluminium props. I will be speaking to Volvo dealer this afternoon so will ask.

I've got an AD31P 150 hp turbo diesel, with DP - E drive with Alu props, was told the SS ones are too heavy and would be thrown off ? Eh !

hmmmm
since they are rotating any extra weight cancels out and the only weight you have would be the static downward one which compaired with the other forces (thrust and torsion) on the prop and leg, would be neglible.

Peters say Volvo recommend SS for the KAD44's and 300's but not for the 43's :¬(

You have Kad 43's? Is this guy reliable cos the guy I spoe to is and he was telling me this cos he just did a claim for a guy with Kad43s in a V42 and Princess are shelling out for S/S props.

I have also spoken to the boat dealer he new nothing about it. It'll be nice if the do foc replacements tho. Please keep us informed.

Just been informed it was on anything above KAD32 recommended S/S props. Obv any one who has to shell out is not going to know anything about it. How old is your boat?

My boat is two weeks old.

I have just got off the phone with Volvo Penta UK - At the London Boat Show they recommended SS props as an option on the KAD300 due to the power. The guy's analogy was something like metro tyres on a ferrari (metro tyres being Aluminium props and ferrari being KAD300's) Ali props with KAD300's can suffer from something called...... bugger it can't remember what he said but it was something like rotor burn or something??? The amount of power from the 300's and water friction can make the paint come off and the props distort.
So unfortunately there is no recall or foc replacements.

No, got to manufacturer as Volvo told manufacturer to put S/S props on as this is a problem they knew about and made a recommendation to all manufacturers fitting these engines and drives.

Manufacturers were negilegent (sp) to tell you or fit S/S and therefore are at fault.

Paint came off my 99 boat (KAD32's) within a few weeks. This caused the propsto corrode. At the end of my first season Volvo did me two pairs at 66% discount. Rather fortunate this as the week before they were due to be replaced Mrs PeteM ran the boat aground whilst I was having a pee.

He was'nt that reliable as Princess have never done 43's in the V42.
