I have a VP Kad32 that is less than two years old with 90 hours on the clock. The raw water pump has started to drip from underneath. When it was commisioned it came with a 1 year warranty with the possibility of taking a second year as long as I had a special service at the end of year one. I chose not to take this offer (possibly a bad idea) so in effect I had a one year warranty.

Now what are my options with reards to this pump. I could buy a new one from VP, but it seems a bit much that it should fail so soon.

The pumps are made by either Jabsco or Johnson so I believe, can one be got from them for less? If so how do I find out the pump number?

I have also read about the possibility of overhauling my pump with new seals and stuff.

What does the fora think?

sounds lto me like it just needs a bit of servicing and no need to get upset. Buying a new pump is unlikley to be necessary. Save the money and invest in a a Nigel Calder book.
 
An overhaul kit includes brass bits that wear out but you will not need these.

A few orings should do it BUT is it dripping oil or salt water into the bearings ?

Sorry to say if salt you should go to the trouble to borrow a bearing press and replace those while you are changing the seals.

havent Volvo been offering....nay giving....two year warranty on new engines for several years?

Otherwise the usual "fit for purpose" seems to get the right responce these days
 
Yes thge two year warranty has been offered since the beginning of 2006 but is conditional on having a special end of first year service at normal VP prices. At that time the engine had only 20 hours on so I (foolishly, maybe) didn't bother. I have emailed Volspec, the engine's suppliers so i'll see what happens.

The pump is dripping salt water which has been sprayed all over the front of the engine. I am sure the bearings must have been contaminated.
 
When running fast I don't know as I'm normally at the helm. Dried salt appears all over the front of the engine, belts and belt cover.

When at idle I just get a drip from underneath the pump mid way between the engine block and the impellor cover. Can't see underneath, but at the same position on top is a hole where you can see the shaft spinning. If there is also a hole underneath like this, my guess is it's coming from there.

You might want to check the cap on the raw water filter. I had the same problem on my D4 and it was thought originally to be the water pump. The raw water filter cap was expanding under load and spraying water all over the front of the engine. Turns out that there was a re-call on the cap by volvo. The water would also drip down the back of the raw water filter at 1500rpm onto the raw water pupmp shafting thus giving the appearance that the pump was leaking.
 
I dont think its a major issue, I had the exact same leakage on a AD31 many years ago (I think its the same engine block and pump as the KAD32).
I don't remember the fix exactly but I think there was an impeller kit that included some other stuff which cured the issue.
volvopaul and spannerman will know for sure.
 
Re the cap, it just sounds lke an identical problem and symptom. I always checked the cap was tight but the cap sizes were changed on my engine after a number of issues. The seal would give way at 2700 rpm spraying water all over the engine, yet when at rest all looked water tight and dry.
 
I have kad43's and one of the waterpumps started to leak. It's very easy to to fix, just buy the maintenance kit. I think it was about £40. Can be done easily in less than an hour including re fitting the pump.
 
HI 2 Seals are about ten pounds and its an hours labour at the most to repair it, unless the shaft is scored then you will need a full overhaul kit about a hundred quid and 2 hours labour, dont worry!
 
If you are really lucky it will be the seal immediately behind the impellor in the raw water pump.Try to dry off the pump with tissue or rag and run engine,it is usually quickly fairly obvious which of the seals has failed and where the water is weeping from.On my "older"version of this engine the seal can be replaced very quickly by removing the impellor to access the old seal and to replace it with a new one.
Takes about 30 mins to do the job.
Replaced a seal about 2 years ago and even despite some wear on the shaft,it has remained watertight to date.
 
Just remove the pump, plonk it down on the counter at the VP dealer, and ask them to fit an overhaul kit.

It's really not a big deal, but don't wait, as the salty water leak will cause chaos if left unfixed.

Hi all!

Old thread, but have the same problem on my aq225.

I am pretty new to motorboats and big V8 engines (was a sailing boat owner for many years), so still learning a lot. Can somebody point me to a raw water filter cap that I see mentioned here as a potential problem.
