Out of interest, should the level be checked with the dipstick screwed home, or resting on the top?...

Resting on the top, not screwed home.

Checking Oil Level

Remove dipstick by turning anticlockwise. Wipe dipstick and reinsert in the drive/reverse gear without screwing it in. ........

Its not specified in many of the manuals though ... i looked in several last night before I found one where its was ... pretty sure its not specified in Nigel's manual.

I'd guess that if you filled to the max mark with the dipstick screwed right in the level will still be above the min mark when it isn't ????

I'm sure I've seen the same as Stork. Normally I just look when it's been resting its only a tiny difference either way.
