A friend has 290 outdrive ram with a leaking seal (outer seal) is there a service kit to replace the seals or is it buy a new ram time.

Sure somebody will be along but pretty sure there is kit and it is very worthwhile compared to new ram prices,

Be very careful..
I bought some ram seals from a guy in land of kilt wearers, that failed in a week.
I found a guy in the states who offered a set with a guarantee.
Brilliant result, only problem was the pin wrench, which was not anywhere near suitable.
I even did them without removing the drive, as I did nt want to remove it again.
Still brilliant result 2 years on..
PM me if you want to get his info.

We got new seals for our DPE rams last year from Nick at Seabridge Marine. They are still sealing just fine with no leaks.

Fiddly job to fit but much cheaper then buying new rams.

Probably not as fiddly as fitting new rams!

You are right there..
The secret with rebuilding the rams is to make sure that the bores are not scored.
If they are ok then the need to remove them from the transom shield saves a lot of time and effort.
The use of quality parts wherever you source them from is essential.

I help my friend to day with his ram and all went very well for the dismantling. He has managed to source all the seals from a seal company that are local so hopefully it will work a treat i will let you all know how goes.

Had a text today to say that my friend had fitted the seals and the rams work a treat so hopefully time will tell. The company he got the seals from was pirtech in portsmouth so hopefully this will help others and also grand total of £25 was spent to do both rams so beats buying new rams.

Seals only work when the bore of the cylinder is perfect and the chrome rods are not pitted or scored, you have to be 100% sure, personally I won't fit seals unless the owner is sure he wants to pay for another lift out should they fail after fitting.
