I had a quiet smirk at the bit where it said 'easy starting'. I haven't met anyone who has one of these that starts easily from cold.

I dont understand ,I never had a problem starting mine from very cold all you need is a decent blow torch(parafin and lit)directed up the air inlet(dont try this at home children).
On a good cold day you could probably go from flash to bang in less than 20 minutes.

Philip,
When did you last get your injectors checked out? item in manual:

5.9 Test injectors every 4-6 years or 200 - 400 hours of operation. Pull injectors and have a machine shop do it.

Why put up with bad starting, it is either poor compression or poor atomization of the fuel. My problem was caused by loss of compression from pitted valve seats and 15 year old well shot injectors. Must have spent £160 in all but fingers crossed it looks as though its cracked it, engine started straight away and even more impressive was the revs increased immediatly.

Happy sailing & motoring!
Trevor

I agree with Trevor. Given good maintenance, no diesel engine should be that difficult to start! Perhaps us raggies have a tendency to neglect our mechanical parts??!!

I'll take your advice and get them out and checked before launching.

I did have the engine winterised, but the engineer who did it, said that although difficult to start initially, it started without problem subsequently. He thought it was due to the age of the engine, 1986, and a bit of wear on the bores.

I suggested the injectors as there is a bit of smoke when just idling, so with your input, I think I will go along with my thoughts and get the injectors out and checked.

After all, there are only 3 of them, and that should not break the bank - I hope! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Ours started very nicely, every time. Just did the cold start procedure (stop lever up and down at full throttle) and she would burst into life within seconds even if not run for weeks before. Original from 1986, ran very smoothly. Now the gearbox spline shaft - that is a different story.....
