Two diesel engines both 200hp. Toyota Nanni 4.390TDI. 3 year warranty and the Volvo TAMD 41. 1 year warranty. The question is which one is the better engine.
The well proven Volvo or the modern Toyota Nanni????

What one would you choose?

"The question is which one is the better engine.".........is a loaded question. In what respect. There are so many different areas to cover that a book, nay a series of books, could be written on the subject.
To define the paramiters a bit more what are YOU looking for in an engine. What sort of boat is it going into etc etc.
Sorry to be pedantic but it will give you clearer answers and make it easier for people to give you much more concise information

Oh and by the way. Welcome to the forum, you do realise that all your get is confused!

Hi,

The boat is a beneteau antares 7.60. Basically what I would like is a good reliable engine combined with decent fuel economy.

My first thoughts were Volvo but the Nanni offers a tempting 3 year warranty. Unfortunately the Nanni is fairly new and not much known about it. Thought I'd try the forum.

Surely taking it at face value the 3 year warranty should swing it. Ask yourself why Volvo used to give a 3 year warranty but now only give a year. In saying that you do need to look at the small print, theres bound to be lots of it!

I found it a pain in the butt being tied into a 3 year Volvo warranty. Sure, I could have not bothered getting it serviced by a volvo dealer and invalidated the warranty, but felt almost obliged to keep the service record good, just in case.

Much cheaper (if nothing goes wrong) to get the engines serviced by the local marine engineer rather than a volvo agent. So, one year warranty gives you a wider choice earlier of service engineers after the warranty has run out.

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.nannidiesel.com/>Heres's</A> as good a plce to start than any.
Seems the Nanni is based on the four pot indirect injected Toyota lump which is in a word Bombproof. Pretty sure its the one thats powered many a mercinaries pickup in Africa. Clarkson tried killing one and failed. Even sunk the thing on a rising tide and it still started.
Theres a saying among my mates in the car trade, "buy Jap or German and you won't go wrong". Ok so its not a car but its block comes from one of the manufactures that build motors that get abused.
2 mins on google kicked that site up.

I won't comment on Volvo as I'm biased in the wrong direction.

As the proud possesor of 2 x 20 year old V....o diesel lumps I have yet to regret the type of engines in my boat.My greatest worry is that my boat will be out of service not due to stuff going wrong, but to not being able to get hold of the bits(at virtually any cost/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif)to get me back underway again. With Volvo there is a dealer around every headland, both official and otherwise. Was able to get a very obscure and rare spare part in 24 hours recently.Just how many marine Toyota dealers are there around the UK.

Changed my boat this year, last year we had a Merry Fisher 805 with the Nanni Engine, same as the one you are looking at, the new boat has the new D6's, take it from me go for the Nanni, the block is the TOYOTA landcruisers and will go for ever, servicing costs half as much for the Nanni. Don't wish to say anymore as in serious discussion with V---o at present, but look at the Nanni.

Its not the posemobile wouldbe McAlpine wannabes drive around in. More the glorified tractor roaming around Africa. Not sure theres a branch of Mercinaries Surplus near you tho.
