Volvo Oil Filters

I bought genuine Fram filters from Inline filters matched to the Volvo filters exactly. Apparently there are fakes doing the rounds. Inline filters were fine and no problem to deal with, but the experience with Fram filters was shocking. Two fuel filters literally fell off mid passage and we ended up being towed back to our berth. Fortunately it was a lovely calm day and we were not too far from the marina and a friend was passing and saw we were in bother. Over 120 litres of diesel ended up in the bilge with fumes (carbon monoxide?) nearly killing us! 100% true story and the most scary incident we have experienced in over 30 years boating. Never again would I fit Fram filters. One dodgy filter is one to many but two? Fram were shocking to deal with as they just denied everything and were not interested.

That's a brief description of what happened and now I only fit Volvo filters. Of course Volvo stick their name on filters made by others, but at least they have satisfied themselves that their supplier is producing parts fit for purpose.

If you put the Volvo part number into their search box, it’ll take you straight to their Baldwin filters (Inline FL70689 Filter-Lube(Equivalent: SP-994, BT223, LF3460, WL7074)). There’s any number of suppliers out there: if you search on the part number, you be directed to suppliers sites.

What do you mean "fell off"? Unscrewed, filter casing separated, or something else?

I use Volvo oil filters on a 2020 bought annually from Keypart. My reason for sticking with them is they are about an inch longer so much easier to get a hold off and unscrew in an awkward location on the 'wrong' side of the engine without splashing black oil round the bilges. I can never get my plastic bag properly round the short ones.

Happily used InLine and Baldwin for many years.
Regarding performance. If you do 200 hours motoring in a year and imagine equivalent to 40mph. That's 8000 miles between changes.
On that basis I always felt comfortable.

Wouldn't buy filters from the darker corners of the interweb.

Hi D&T, just checked my spreadsheet. The original Volvo part number is 861830. Mann filter W610/1 Mahle filter OC217
Bosch filter 72167.
Xcw, if you are happy to pay Volvo prices for a coat of spray paint on somebody else’s filter, feel free.

The volvo ones are expensive as they have the name Volvo on them.

I use genuine Volvo filters on my MD21b I get them from a Volvo main dealer (about 6 to 8 euros) ...they are cheaper than spurious ones from any marine outlet(15 euros)...it's a matter of getting the cross-reference numbers and off you go...

Parts4engines do fuel filters as well as oil filters, I use both and order 2 or 3 at a time to save on postage. I also use their water pump impellors and change evrey year and carry a spare. I seem to recall their prices dont include VAT

Don't understand that comment...the reference I used was from the Penta suppliers website for original Volvo oil filter. I pick up new ones using a photo of the existing...engine number never came into it! (Or was I just lucky.)

Way more filter brands than manufacturers.

If you change filters on your boat engine every year (or every other), your filters will have done only a fraction of the work done by e.g. industrial engines so longevity as such not really a concern.

Been using WIX for decades (WIX is owned by Mann+Hummel btw) in boats, cars, tractors, lorries... Never had an issue.

Fram (First Brands Group) have had some bad reviews, I know.

m memory there were two different oil filters used on this unit with slightly different thread sizes one just marginally bigger than the other the small one could be forced onto the larger which in turn rattled on the smaller I think the attaching nipple could be updated to cure the problem although it is possible that it was md21 rather than MD21B

You may be correct. There were filters onboard when I bought the boat that did not fit...perhaps PO was not as lucky as I was....
