Volvo MD17 smoke

Hi, just bought a little launch with an MD17 that has white smoke when cold but clears when up to temp, i'm guessing head gasket that seals when hot. Anyone any other ideas?

Are you sure it's smoke and not steam in this cold weather? Have you any white gunge in the oil filter or oil residue in the coolant? All signs of a head gasket problem. I would suggest to start with the simple stuff first.

I havent picked the boat up yet, i actually meant steam, seems like steam the way the owner described it, being raw water cooled theres nothing to see in the coolant and he says it doesnt burn much oil.
