Hello!

Can anyone give me information on a Volvo Penta TAMP74 p-a? Its a 480hp from 2000. Concerned about reliability & parts availability in the UK & the Med as it doesn't seem to be a common model as far as I can tell?

Thanks

I think the TAMP & TAMD are different models - maybe only slightly different, I don't know.

Were these engines replaced with the D range, such as the D6, or are they still available?

A great engine and widely available for parts, nothing to worry about . What boat are they installed in?

I think Volvo state 100 hours or every year. to get an idea of parts prices try Keypart.com, great for all the usual service bits. Med prices @ 25% more

Nice link, thanks.

So about the 100 hours - I'm easily confused. Med trip. Scilly Islands to Gib is about 4 days motoring. So stop at Gib for oil change. Then say, on to Malta - another 4 days. Another oil change? Is that how I need to do it?

First of all +1 for Nicho's post about the TAMD74Ps. We had them in a Sealine T47 which had over 2000 hours on the engines when we sold her. The only significant problem we had was with the vacuum switch from the manifold that asks for the turbos to cut in. This became rusted up with the result that the turbos didn't! Actually the problem was solved with a hair dryer but understanding what was happening took a long time. Otherwise just routine servicing.

I think your estimate of four days to Gib may be a bit on the light side. Although I don't know what kind of boat you are thinking about using, you would need to check it has the range to cross Biscay (about 330 miles plus safety margin of 20% say). If you can't manage that you will have to sail around the Bay (around 600 miles). Trying much more than 150 miles a day is pretty tiring and not something want to do unless you were a delivery skipper. Having said all that, if you can average 20 kts you are probably going to knock up somewhere not far short of 100 hours to Gib.

I have done UK to Porto round the Bay and it is a great trip but, IMHO, to be done slowly and taking in the great places you pass on the way. If I was in a hurry to get a boat to the Med I would look to have it road transported. There are plenty of threads on the subject on the forum.

Good luck with whatever boat you buy and whichever route you choose.

Useful for me that everyone says that the engines are fine!

The trip suggestion was just an example about the oil changes. I wouldn't go down to the ed like my example, I would definitely take my time. But we're still talking an oil change in Gib?

The boat has a range of about 1,000nm at about 10knts. In this case, I'm just trying to get my head around oil changes & how much oil I have to carry.

Marina is very good. (I am in Portimao now). Good shelter. Lots of marine services to hand. .......and the fresh fish is to die for!.
Yes it’s lovely...much easier for a drop in to fuel than Lagos or Vilamoura and if you can stop a while you have Ferragudo opposite which has an amazing beach and great anchorage - easy access to fuel and good shelter.
We are keeping our new boat in Vilamoura in season 1 because it is closer to the house but we will really miss Portimao...

Had lunch in Ferragudo yesterday.....at Suesta........excellent. One boat (approx 50-55ft) had problems anchoring/getting a good hold just off the quay...........but it was obvious why!..........too little cable down..............but it did make for an interesting observation for the diners in Suesta!...............

Checking Google Earth, there seems to be a couple marinas. Are you in the one next to the beach? Obviously it has wi-fi, what are the prices like?
