Have heard they are good. Any idea where to get one mail order? Are they easy to fit? Boat is a Moody31.

Thanks for any help - in anticipation.

Which are you talking about - the Volvo shaft seal or The Deep Sea Seal? The Volvo seal you can get from any Volvo dealer but will only fit a limited number of metric size shafts.
The Deep Sea Seal is different and comes in many different sizes, but is more expensive than the Volvo.
The Deep Seal seal is good, don't know anything about the Volvo, but I believe they are OK.
Go to http://www.asapsupplies.com for the Deep Sea Seal.

A few years ago I had a Moody 31 and fitted a Volvo shaft seal which proved to be totally reliable. You will find that the Volvo seal is for a 25mm shaft whereas the shaft in the Moody is 1". In practice this is not a problem (1" is 25.4mm) It is a straightforward job but you will find you need to remove the battery boxes. On my previous boat I had fitted a Deep Sea Seal with no problems but chose the Volvo seal as it was considerably cheaper.

We have a Volvo shaft seal and have had no problems at all with it. No drips or leaks whatever.
Must remember to "burp" the seal each time the boat is re-launched. This allows the trapped out from inside. Failure to do this will overheat the seal as it is water cooled/lubricated. Burping involves squeezing the sides of the seal until water comes in and all the air has been purged.
Sometimes during the season it's a good idea to repeat burp it as air can get back in, or perhaps it's gas from the water. Not a problem though.

Went thru 3 Deep sea seals in 5 years (East Coast muddy water & a drying mooring). Fitted Vovo Shaft Seal and didn't have a problem from then on!, comments from previous post apply, also if vessel not used for some time, worth giving it a squeeze.

We too have used the Volvo seal for last 8 years on two different boats. No problems whatsoever. We're in drying mud berth so 'burp' on each departure. Only maintenance is squirt of special grease once per year. I suppose they must have a downside, or everyone would use them! But we have yet to notice one.

the downside is that some (fast revving power power prehaps) boats tend to cause them to fail and when they fail it is fairly dramatic. I would like to fit them to my boat but have "bottled out" after having heard of so many failures.

The reason I hav'nt used the Volvo seal is that I need it for 1" shaft and 2" tube diameter: the nearest Volvo is only for a 40mm diameter tube and 25mm shaft.

Thanks everyone! Yes I do mean "shaft seal" - well I know now! Can anyone recommend an online supplier? Tried surfing the net to no avail.

I don't know much about volvo deep sea seals but I installed a shaft seal from clements engineering last season. This is an american system and so far has worked very well. You can buy and mount additional seals so that if you need to replace then you cut the old seal out and push the new one on without the need for removing the shaft.

Fitting was dead easy and the backup from clements was superb.

they have a website:

Seemingly a lot of older moodys have a 1" shaft as well and have used the 25mm seal with no apparent ill-effects. I think the owners' assoc. website says stuff about it. the usual disclaimers apply, yada, yada, yada....

cheers,
david
