I have a 2003 in a westerly falcon which uses about a half gallon per hour at 2500 revs which equates to 6 knots or one third gallon at 5 knots, can't remember the revs. Wouldn't think it would be much different to these figures.

Volvo 2030 or Yanmar?

Just to rekindle the Volvo v Yanmar debate .. was there a Yanmar option as in the past the general consensus seemed to be that Yanmar beats the pants off Volvo?

Re: As a very rough guide....

I also got half a gallon per hour at 2400 rpm from a 2003. It will deteriorate with higher revs, but definitely not as bad as a gallon an hour.

Watch the logarithmic fuel gauge on the Volvo. 50% round the dial = 1/2 full

4 litres a hour seems a lot, my perkins Perama M20(same as Volvo Penta 2020) uses ¾litre an hour at 2000 RPM, I would have thought you could safely say 2 litres a hour at 2000 RPM for your 2030.
The only real check is to do a check once you have the boat.

I have the 2040 in my boat. It burns 2.3 litres per hour at 2000 rpm giving 6.5 knots. At 2500 rpm it drinks 3 litres per hour and drives the boat at 7.2 knots.

Re: Volvo 2030 or Yanmar?

Jim, there was no Yanmar option on Bavaria boats. The standard unit for the Bav 36 is the 2020, but at 19hp, it was recommended I went for the 29hp option as the boat is 37' long and evidently has a (true as opposed to calculated) displacement of around 5300KG. Don't really know if this was a sales ploy or genuine, but I didn't want to find myself motoring flat out in strong tide and going backwards!. I am actually a fan of Yanmars, knowing quite a few installtions in Sealines. Certainly the bigger ones are crackers, being specifically designed for marine use as opposed to marinised truck engines

cheers

To my best knowledge the VP 2020 / 2030 and its equivalents from Yanmar are all Kubota industrial engines. So base solididty should be similar.

The fact of the matter seem to be the electrical parts used for the marinisation.

Kubota based e3ngines are used in NANNI and BETA engines and I believe Universal in the USA

Must say they look substantially different, at least in the engine range I looked at.
I only had bad experiences with Volvo boat engines, and when I got my last boat, the final and hard decision for which yard would get the order, was then easily resolved as one of them would only agree to install Volvo.

Thanks everyone - good news is it burns hardly anything - just wanted to get an idea of range if no wind. Did not want to kick off a Volvo v Yanmar argument!. Bavaria only specify Volvo or I'd have chosen Yanmar . Thanks again

...as Perkins stopped building the small units themselves.

I friend woriking in that industry gave me once a list of engine-families and where they are used for what. Most diesel engines that we see in the smaller ranges have had a 'life' before. ;-)

Bear in mind that for much of the time, you will actually be motor sailing anyway, rather than engine alone - so the consumption will be far lower since you can keep the revs down.
