Have seen some bad reports on the above engine. Has anyone any experience of these and if so are they as bad as made out?

Switch ignition on first though. The Volvo cold start procedure is:
In neutral, set the throttle to full speed. Pull out the stop cable and then push it home. Reset the throttle to about about quarter to half speed. Then crank the starter motor.

I have trouble cold-starting my VP2003. I've resorted to shots of ether, which isn't a good solution. Tell me more about the cold-start procedure. I haven't heard of this and there's nothing on this in the manual I have.
One suggestion has been to install a glow plug. Is that a good idea? If so, where do I find the proper glow plug?
A compression test a few years ago was ok. The engine has been lightly used.
