VHF DSC Training

Yup....

Having sailed with a few, I have only ever heard one skipper use the phrase 'over and out', but I'm not saying who /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Started using VHF and UHF at 15, by the time I was 18 I realised how easy it was to wind up the prim and proper type on airfileds by using 'non correct' procedures /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

'At least, in the military.'

I have it on good authority that 'Roger' is not recognised by RYA for VHF radio speak.

'Understood' is the term of choice.

So I'm told. What hey, what do I know?

But if you grow a handlebar moustache and wear a Bigglesscarf, flying jacket and goggles, I'll let you off.

Did I say a word ? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif oh dear sir, not me sir, would I do that sir, I couldn't possibly sir /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wonder how many operate without a valid ticket these days though

I have sent a e-mail to Al to see if he could organise a course for all of us somewhere.
I await his response.
Hopefully he will pop up on here with it.

im up for it too,i have not done the VHF/DSC course,so far ive done RYA 1 and 2 and the day skipper practical.

Thinking of finishing the day skipper theory and then doing coastal skipper.

what about first Aid? is there a first aid course that is weighed towards sailing?

rodger is also the correct terminology for sub sea communications

rodgering is also a term used by seamen, unfortunately i am too much of a Gentleman to give the translation /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Matt

If you did the 3 day HSE first aid course for your divers ticket that is far more comprehensive than the 1 day RYA course. Although I dont think many sailors get gas embolisms /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not sure if Al does the VHF/DSC course, but it sounds like a good idea to get a group booking going if we can, even if it's with somebody else. I've ticked for Cambridge as it's the closest to home, but if everyone goes for the closest we could end up in Essex /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'll give Al & Tina a call and see if they can be, ahem, persuaded to help out /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

On a well known sea school boat, a young lady was asked to use the VHF under the skipper's supervision. The lady did her best to make the VHF call, but it was obvious to anyone listening that she was a radio novice.

After a rather protractied conversation for a fairly simple transaction, the Harbourmaster concluded the conversation with 'Roger that lady, out'.

Reminds me of a conversation I had a couple of weeks ago with a certain GibSea of these parts....

".... are you coming over over"

"yes... we soon be over over"

"well.... we'll see you when you get over out"

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for the over and out bit..... I sailed for so many years with an ex fly boy who did it every time that its become ingrained... and ocassionally it slips out.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif... besides... it appears from this thread that i'm one of the very few who actually has a bleedin licence!!!!!

Still.... I am looking forward to the opportunity to speak to Sailorman.... "Roger Roger!"
