Pretty sure the weather and routing is discussed with their teams mainland if I remember correctly previous VG races.

My understanding from the commentary during the start is that the shore crew arent allowed to advise, they are on thier own

It's all in the race instructions and the NOR. Competitors can only download unmodified weather forecasts or other information that must be available to all competitors.
