I am looking at the 43 or 51hp modles. I think they are based on Mitsubishi engines.
How do they rate against the likes or Beta or Nanni?

I would always favour Vetus against Beta or Nanni, especially if the price is anywhere near comparable.

Why go for the Hurth box? they are not the most reliable. I know of one or two cases especially with river or canal craft where they have not lasted very long and we have yet to find a satisfactory answer to the problem.

Have you checked the Yanmar, the 4 cyl is rated at 56HP and has very good power to weight ratio. Extremely reliable and spares available almost evrywhere

Why? From what experiences?
If this one is at the bottom of the queue, we should deserve some explanatory words of wisdom from The Bargee

Re: Vetus Engines - recommended

I have a Vetus M3.10 3 cylinder Mitsubishi 22hp with a Hurth gearbox which is 12 years old and still going very well. Starts first crank and no smoke. The only Vetus parts I have needed were new cooling water hoses 2 years ago. Oils, oil filter and belt are standard items from the local car spares shop.
