Venturing along the South Coast - where to stop

I discovered the other week that the Brighton entry, in the dark, in a 25knt Southerly is not funny and not clever especially if its your first time.
Not only that but there was no staff about, only a security guard who frankly did not want to know, we rolled around all night on the visitors mooring and was charged £29.
We had no idea what the codes for the loos were and so all felt as if we were in some huge jail complex.
On my "avoid like the plague" list.

Folly inn up the Medina was always a good stop for a night.
Also a visitors mooring at Wooton creek on IOW, nice club and pub.

Wetherspoons in Brighton for inexpensive pub grub

Hmm. Not keen myself.
Bella Napoli is OK, genuine Italian not a chain. A bit dearer I must admit.
There are also Cafe Rouge, Prezzo, Nando, Zizzi, too many to mention. See http://www.brightonmarina.co.uk/eat-and-drink.aspx
The Master Mariner wasn't too bad the one time I went in, nearest thing to a proper pub - but still quite Wetherspoonish.
I think this is going to confirm to Brigantia that he doesn't want to use Brighton marina!
Brigantia, don't rule out Shoreham, your boat would get up the river to us http://www.sussexyachtclub.org.uk/ at most states of tide, Shoreham has proper pubs as well as the club. I would rate it well above Newhaven.
Garage 100 yards away.

Just seen Javelin's comment. In a strong S/SW Brighton is a bitch, Shoreham better, Newhaven best.

I'm pretty sure that Premier Marinas at Gosport and Chichester both sell petrol as well as diesel. Premier at Gosport and Port Solent definitely do. I'm going down to Chichester on Thursday so if nobody's let you know by then, I'll report back.

Chichester Marina definitely has petrol on the fuel pontoon.

Birdham pool is rustic, good showers etc and has diesel. You can either walk to Dell Quay about 30 mins away to the pub, or go the the Itchenor pub which is exactly as you've requested. There's buses to Chichester but I don't know the timetable :) It's right next to Chichester marina so you can walk down to the swindlery if need be, or force4 is up the road but a bit of a walk.

Birdham Pool also has the advantage of being a TransEurope marina so half price for us!

Thanks one and all for all the info, it is fantastically helpful

The only problem I now foresee is that the two or three days we'll (at best) have in the East Solent area would seem to be about a week shy of how long we really need to even scratch the surface
