Vendée Globe 2016-2017

run the wind on 48hrs. ALC will have to come north. I'm sure that Tommo has decided to position himself to go over the top of the low which will move from the north.

That was my initial thought too - but not so clear on reflection.

Maybe ALC will keep on his current heading and go under the low. He will still be getting +20knots of wind and will only need to be close hauled for a short period before getting back onto a long period of port reaching. By aiming to go over the top of the low, AT will be punishing himself yet more in 40-50knot winds and taking a longer route. Not clear to me that AT has made the best choice.

I agree, I had assumed AT would head south a couple of days ago but I guess the conditions prevented him from doing so.

Listening to AT's broadcasts over the last few days its pretty clear that he is not spending much, if any, time
worrying about where the competition is.
His main priority has been to conserve the boat, keep it from suffering any more damage, and maintain his
position in the fleet.
He has spoken of the advantage of knowing that there is a comfortable 1000+ nm lead over the boats pursuing him -
so he has no need to worry about them.
But at this stage of the race he doesn't appear to be too concerned about his position vis a vis ALC.

It could be that only us armchair warriors are watching the developing race with baited breath (-:

Some now saying The Boss has pulled a blinder, by staying North............................

And Le Cleac'h may encounter head winds, also, he will be restricted by the ice exclusion zone ............................

Only time................................. will tell

Time has told.
ALC gibed and is currently making 5kt VMG compared to 19 kt VMG for Tommo.

Alex has done well since 08:00, and there seem to be favourable wind patterns ahead for him.
It's going to be an important 24 hrs, providing the windtv site is correct.

COME ON ALEX

A very big + 1 from me! Just looked at the Vendee tracker with wind selected - fingers crossed for Alex it could be good .....

AT really making inroads into the gap now. VMG 17.7kt over the last 24hr, whereas ALC has only averaged 12. Gap down to about 37nm now. Another eight hours of this would put AT back in the lead!

Sailing into 50 knots of wind plus gusts. Lets hope they both manage to keep their boats in one piece. Alex will be on starboard, so I wonder if he will have the working foil deployed or protected.

What's happened to AT this morn? Speed is way down???? I didn't think he had hit those light airs that ALC did.

down to 2.4 knts now and running downwind. Doesn't look good.
