Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Traveling as the same speed Alex is going to have to sail 20 miles a day more to keep pace, which is why he is going backwards. It is a real shame that he was keeping pace really well for so long.

That's if they have similar conditions. AT will be hoping his routing takes him to better winds first. I think AleC has made the better decisions so far, on the whole, though AT has a damaged boat. Still all to play for.

Still a long way to go - nearly half the race and Alex is less than 2% adrift in terms of mileage to go. Lots still to happen and ok now he's c200 miles behind but who knows what will come of the lateral separation and resulting different weather patterns, also reliability of their boats and future tactics. Not to mention unknowns like UFOs. He could get 200 miles back before Cape Horn although I would be a bit surprised. After Cape Horn or even after the equator may be more likely but let's hope the absence of a foil doesn't ruin things.

Must admit I'm spending more time following this than I should and I'm not even doing the virtual race!

Difficult to cover someone from 180 miles in front. :)

I don't think so. Armel is a long way further South which will mean he's in a different part of the weather from AT. All well and good if he he's in the better wind, a disaster if he's not, if he keeps to the same latitude AT can't catch up. I'm not sure how current the skipper's info is as regards rivals point of sail though.

But that's not the way Armel sails... He always follows his instincts and has proven time and time again that he is a master tactician on the water. Furthermore, being on the same latitude could actually allow Alex to catch up, and would give him an easier time to consider his options, where there, he's got to push his boat all the time, which is not ideal considering his damaged foil.

Every time I look, Alec has a low VMG, even when boat speed is good. On the other hand, Armel seems good at keeping boat speed and VMG pretty close. I can't understand why Alec is not more focused on VMG.
Surely every lost knot of VMG is a lost mile to the finish and means more miles to cover than Armel and less chance of winning?

Message just popped up - Vendee Globe have made boat positions unavailable to fan sites :(

AT now over 200nm adrift...

Looks like Windytv are deffinitely loosing the VG update data. Their latest update shows the following notice "No more updates.
Vendee Globe have made boat positions unavailable for fan sites.
" Spoil-sports! Sort of diminishes overall spirit associated with the race!

I don't understand that. If the VG data feed (API) has been disabled then surely Windytv could just manually enter the positions to their tracker every schedule instead.

It's presumably set up to be automated, and would require a software change plus ongoing manpower to do it any other way. Shame, I had only just started using it too.

Hum well, with loads more sailing on port tack and stbd foil knackered i don’t much see a way for AT to get back without a Problem for the leader. AT caught back in atlantic and lead and extended the lead ... when he had the fastest boat - looks now as tho he might have 2nd fastest boat, and the fastest is in front of him...

Or is that COMPLETE and utter rubbish? Hope so!

I refer the Honourable Gentleman to the reply I gave just a few moments ago...

Yes, you can, using the onscreen controls.... but without the boats' positions overlay. Take those from the BossVendee link given earlier.

VG a lot less interesting now that the windy tracker has been handicapped. The VG website itself is utterly useless.

Some nice daily summary notes here... including the reason for Jean-Pierre Dick heading northwards..
Vendee news at Sailingscuttlebutt
If you click on their 'News' link at the top of the page you can then find daily updates.

Thanks for the above link.

Nice round up in the daily updates although a bit in arrears.

Notice that one bloke has just the main up with 3 reefs in with 7m swells. And might
heave to again for a while.

So, am I correct in assuming (and hoping) that:-

http://alexthomsonracing.geovoile.com/vendeeglobe/2016/tracker/

is showing accurate data and boat icon positions?

Shame gis.ee/vg (windytv) has stopped, it was very useful to see where the boats and wind would be over the next 12, 24, 36 hrs etc

Hmmmm, Alex now 253nm behind Armel. Things not going well, at the mo.
