Vendée Globe 2016-2017

I thknk it is about to get worse. in 24 hours it looks like Alex will have head winds whilst Armel will be sailing down wind. his move North has been a disaster and he is being caught from behind.

+1 But a great update and always the optimist.

I really hope AT and Hugo Boss are OK (other than the broken foil which we already know about), he has been very slow today. Much slower than I thought he would have been, judging by winds (on windytv).

It looks like he will have the wind advantage over Armel, at least overnight. That should be the test if all is OK unless he manages to do a video update to explain what has been happening.

AT has made up 29nm overnight - but he's chasing a another "calm" spot.
Armel is going further north, which means (hopefully) he has further to sail; as did Alex recently.

Gosh, it's nail-chewing stuff.
Like others have said, I'm new to following the VG and I'm hooked.
I even woke at 3 a.m. this morning and thought about those guys down in the Forties.

I agree it is nail biting and I have been hooked from the beginning. Yeah Alex improved overnight as he was sailing towards the rhum line whereas Armel was departing from it. But it looks like Armel will have the best of the winds today and Alex is heading for a 'hole'. Disappointing coverage in the media for this epic challenge - unless you subscribe to the sports channels.

It's interesting to observe the tracks and close proximity of Beyou/Maitre CoQ and Meilhat/SMA, who must be enjoying the sight of another sail - and another voice - in the vast desolation.

The distance measuring tool shows them about 5nm apart.
It was mentioned some time ago that Maitre CoQ had lost some of it's satcomms. He may be staying close to his friend on SMA to get weather data.

Perhaps the UFOs have got to Alex!

I was thinking about this last night as I lay struggling to sleep due to the sound of my lines rubbing on the cleats, so how on earth do these guys sleep onboard, with the boat moving at 25 knots and surfing down 4 metre waves!

Badly

as I lay struggling to sleep due to the sound of my lines rubbing on the cleats,

Now this is totally off thread - but you started it !!!!
Make a large dynema loops. Put it through the eye of the cleat & back over the horns & make sure the end of the loop is overboard. Tie your mooring line to the dynema loop. ( if you have several lines squeaking then do several but experiment one at a time.
The loop does not stretch & shrink & if you have as little on the cleat as possible there is little friction against the cleat ( you have to experiment with this) Do not go through fairleads as any movement against parts of the boat causes noise. It is better if the loop goes straight over the side. The idea is to prevent rope to boat friction & normal rope expands & contracts around the cleat & rubs on fairleads. So any length adjustment of the mooring line is best done at the pontoon in these situations
Squirt cheap washing up liquid on the hull between fenders & hull to reduce fender squeak
When not on the boat revert to normal tying.
Hope that works for you, It did for me when desperate in Ostend one year
