I have aMoody 30 built by marine projects Plymouth in 1979, I do not have the VAT reciept ( the previous owner could not give it to me). However I would feel happier if I had a piece of paper to show the authorities.

Can anyone send me a photocopy of a VAT reciept of this vintage, or similar paperwork.

Thanks in advance

I dont think you will get very far with the tax people. They had a specialist office in (I think) Dover but that shut down because it was too busy. The builders will be your best bet.

I looked at buying a 1987 boat without a VAT receipt some time back, and as far as I recall from my investigations all boats pre-1985 are VAT exempt ? ie. when the EU got involved, they made an amnesty for anything built prior to 1985, so in theory you shouldnt have customs asking questions - maybe call Customs & ask (dont give them your details just in case!). I found that I didnt get any usefull answers until I insisted I speak to someone with practical experience of VAT issues.

I know of one late 80s boat that I looked at when buying current boat last year where numerous sales fell through solely because owner could not produce proof of the boat's VAT status. Story from the (well known South Coast Broker) was that the original invoice was part of the ship's papers they supplied when they last sold the boat but the owner had lost it. The importer of this particular boat had long since ceased trading so no chance of getting a copy from there.

Boat was only finally sold when it was explicitly stated on the brokers details that VAT status could not be proved and the price reduced accordingly.

Regardless of whether or not Customs will ever challenge you over the boat's VAT status, it will certainly affect the boat's desirability to a futuer buyer.
