I have this old and somewhat rusty box in between the steering helm pump and the autopilot pump. Does anyone know it’s proper name and what exactly it does. I’m looking to change the autopilot and would get rid of it if it’s not needed. Thanks

More likely a double pilot operated check valve - which blocks both lines to the pump when you are using the steering wheel but allows return flow back to pump/tank when flow from the pump begins .

I’m not sure it would work in that manner as it is located between the steering wheel and the pump/ram. Seems more likely that it is to stop feedback to the steering wheel when the autopilot pump is operating.
