Using Baracol 10RH on Sprayhood - dilute?

Hi

I have Baracol 10RH which I will be using on the teak areas. However, I would also be using the algae on the canvas sprayhood. Does anyone know if I can I use it undiluted?

I've used it (and Patio Magic) on canvas diluted as per the instructions. It certainly does useful things, but does not completely remove staining.

Boracol 10 RH is 88% ethylene glycol. ( as in antifreeze) I dont think I would use that , even diluted on a canvas spray hood.
Presumably if you are using 10RH you are a professional user and as such you should be aware of the products composition!

Even 5RH, which is the product available to "Joe Public", contains some ethylene glycol to aid penetration into the wood.

Unless you require the octaborate component to protect against insect infestation I'd suggest Patio Magic, Polycell 3 in 1 Mould Killer or a similar benzalkonium chloride based product

No, Vic, it's 88% ethylene glycol and other inert ingredients - mainly water. The ethylene glycol content is probably no more than 15%, and aids absorption into wood.

I wouldn't use it undiluted; probably dilute it 1 part Boracol to 3 parts water. I've used Boracol on teak and sprayhoods for years, with excellent results. I'd also dilute 10RH 50:50 with water for use on the teak.

If it is less than 100% successful, try Wessex Chemicals Sail Cleaner (http://www.wessexchemicalfactors.co.uk/product-detail.php?id=101). It is quite impressive. We use our boat all the year round and leave the sails on - last spring we raised them after a couple of months unused and they were bright green - we applied Wessex Sail Cleaner, left it on for a couple of weeks, then hosed the sails down and they came up pretty clean.

"88% ethanediol and other inert ingredients" is a very strange way of wording it if its mainly water with no more than 15% ethane diol ! but I thought you might be right until I found the technical data sheet that reads:

"DESCRIPTION
Boracol 10RH is a clear solution of 10% Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate and 2% Benzalkonium chloride in ethylene glycol."


The safety data sheet for 5RH is quite clear in stating that it contains 5-10% ethane diol, along with the other main ingredients, and that its all in a aqueous solution!
