Well First it would be nice to know what you wanted it to do! Then we could tell you if it will do it. You aint going round the world in a Bayliner and thats fer nowt!!
MBM gave away a good little supplement a while ago on this subject. I still had it knocking around, but I think I binned it, or the wife did. Have a word with kim, they might do it in the copy shop thing. Failing that I would employ the services of a surveyor.
I was going to buy a Formula that looked very nice from outward apperances, but the survey picked up passed hull damage that I would never have spotted. The cost of the survey was about £150 if I rember rightly, but it saved me shelling out the best part of 18k on a second hand boat that would have fallen to bits in a bit of a blow. Worth the money in the long run. I think the RYA do a couple of titles on buying seconhand. Might be woth have a look at them too.
Upgrading from a sportsboat to a trailerable and therefore small cruiser, i.e. 4 Winns 238 vista. Engine is a Volvo 5.7 Gi with DX leg.
Intending to do sea trial this weekend and was looking for a checklist to make sure that I don't forget anything obvious.
Have spoken to the previous owner, who now has no interest in the boat, and he assures me that as far as he is aware the boat is in good condition.
I will be using the boat around the Solent and with a young family rough weather performance is not much of an issue. I know the deadrise is too shallow but should be ok for what I want.
Will get the engine and leg inspected but consider that the hull inspection is a bit of overkill considering the cost of the boat. No doubt others will disagree.
Boat has H & C water, pump out head, shore power etc. etc so there is a lot more to consider than with a sportsboat.
"with a young family rough weather performance is not much of an issue. "
I would have thought rough weather performance was a major issue. Dont forget. Rough is relative to boat size and performance. The wake off another boat could be rough in your terms. Not saying that theres anything wrong with the 4 Winns. No experience of them. But you do need something that can handle sea. Even in the Solent. Or you'll never use it.
After having a 21' sportsboat and with careful planning for weather we can launch where appropriate. e.g. if its a F5 South Westerley then an amble up the Hamble is the order of the day rather then a trip off the Needles. More a question of not being uncomfortable rather than ever putting anyone, particualrly the kids, into danger.
You (and your family if applicable) have a good look over the boat, does it look nice? What is the upholstry like, is there water anywhere in the boat, Any obvious damage /wear and tear. Is it in your price range. Any funny smells (this one is very difficult for SWMBO to live with).
Once you satisfied yourself with the above points get a surveyor to do the rest. It is a false economy to think you can do their job. Its a small price to pay for peace of mind IMHO. If you are buying with a mortgage the bank will insist on it anyway.
If theres anything that needs doing on it the seller will have to pay for it or he will never sell it (unless someone with a wad of cash and no sense comes along).
Many people have done amazing journeys in small boats, knowing the limitations and pre planning is half the fun. As an instructor once said, the more you put in the more you get out.
Try finding people in this and other forums with the same boat you are about to trial, ask what faults and weaknesses they have found with their craft.
You sound set on this particular boat. Ask a friend to take a subjective view.
If the guy you are hoping to buy from has lost interest he may also have lost interest in paying out for maintenance, servicing, repairs etc. Ask for recepts.
Check he actually owns the boat!
As for surveying get a profesional who has insurance should it all go wrong.
The move to "bigger & better" also carries "bigger & better" bills!
A lemon of a boat now could ruin your best laid future plans.
Hope all turns out well.
