A member of our yacht club mentioned that he had been told that the waters around our coast are not suitable for use with Reverse Osmosis watermakers because of 'impurities' - such as heavy metal residues.

I'm fitting one to use on future voyages - away from the UK!

Any forumites with information/experience?

not so, the problems round here are mainly to do with murk, i wouldn't use mine in the solent for example. i don't believe our seas as so contaminated with heavy metals that they would be a problem. watermakers work less well in cold water than in the tropics but still produce a good product.
