Current restrictions
1.8 m. draught and locking in limited to exactly 1hr. either side of high water.
Was expecting the water shortage to be biting so we stopped overnight in Oban, left against the flood at 11.30 motoring at 6 knots, (Oban HW 14-47, Crinan is Oban minus 1-40) hit the gate in the Sound of Luing just as it turned, got a nice wee wind swing so was motor sailing at 6.5+ and was in Crinan at exactly 15-00 had to wait ten mins. as two boats locked out, refused to lock us in today. Had to hoist the dog ashore on a rope, left boat in the lock on long lines and went home, they have promised to lock us in tomorrow at 13-00. All the time I could not speak to the keeper because of the noise of the water roaring out over the lock gate, still running out at the same rate when we left at 15-00, the other boat beside us asked her to shut the gates and let the wastage fill the lock but she is not allowed to do that. With hindsight we should have come on down to Cullipool yesterday and headed into the Sound early, you can dodge some of the tide along the Luing shore as long as you are careful.
This was at neaps, going to be tricky coming down from the North at springs, if its windy from the west anchoring in Lough Crinan can be rolly.
The wee girl that was manning the lock was trying her best and even tried to get permission to lift us for the dogs sake, (he is old and his kidneys are shot but he will still not pee on the boat). She had to take quite a bit of stick from the boats following us.
My rant is that the drought did not start last week, they knew the reservoirs were getting low 6 weeks ago when a bit of mild control could have been introduced. Can't wait to hear the squeals from the Bellanoch berth holders.

I went through the canal on 14th, entering about 10am and could not make it out Ardrishaig end by closing time.
There was a lot of discussion about which of the two road bridges to open at Ardishaig end (they don't open both at same time), and that took an hour to decide, so that made us too late for the sealock. They said they'd lock us out next morning as three boats, making another 2 wait. That state of tide meant they'd use even more water by waiting until next day. Come morning, we were only one ready and waiting on them at 0830, so guy on said we could go alone. So much for saving water.
In late May we were also through there, and water was said to be short then, but single boat locking seemed no problem.

They have suspended overtime too, so it will be interesting to see what they do next weekend when HW does not coincide with operating hours, will they go for early, late, both or neither?

West Highland Week have cancelled the Ardrishaig feeder race. I suspect most will be going round the Mull in the upcoming days.

Current transit time
Mobo entered sea lock with us just after 15-00 yesterday, stayed there overnight with promise of locking in at 13-00 today, took about an hour with waiting for other boats to come in and sort themselves out, so into Lock 14 at 14-00 arrived at 13 around 15-20 but accompanying yacht at 14 had disappeared so had to wait for two others that came in an hour late, so underway again after 16-00, should get to the top of Dunardry but will not be able to get from there to Ardrishaig within an hour of H.W. tomorrow so will have to stay in the basin until Tuesday, locking out around midday, time for transit 69 hours!
The crew have to be at work in Glasgow tomorrow so I will go up later and run them down to the bus stop and the skipper will have to make his way on through and home on his own. The Mull could have saved them a couple of days.

reminds me of that song...

The Mull of Kintyre
(with apologies to all on the Vital Spark)

Oh the Mull of Kintyre for me
I do like the wide open sea
The canal is too dear, I'll not shed a tear
While saving a pound or three
Sailing the sound of Sanda
Rathlin a passing gander
Macrihanish and Gigha, to me it's no fear
The Mull of Kintyre for me

Chorus
The Mull of Kintyre for me
I do like the wide open sea
Macrihanish and Gigha, to me its no fear
The Mull of Kintyre for me.

The Mull of Kintyre for me
From robbers and thieves you are free
Its not so terrific, just like the Pacific
and closer than Japan or Fiji
A life on the Spanish Main
It widna' drive me insane
The big foaming breakers don't spoil my chart papers
The Mull of Kintyre for me

Chorus

The Mull of Kintyre for me
It's certainly big and not wee
Sometimes it is calm, when frying your ham
and I do like a nice cup of tea
You can even go round in the night
Well guided by Stevenson's light
There's no pricey sale that would make you turn pale
The Mull of Kintyre for me

Chorus

The Mull of Kintyre for me
There's no pilots there with a fee
There's no broken sluice, but I might need my Bruce
And all of the round trip is free
There's no waiting at yon bridge
And even no sign of a midge
You can sail with a breeze and lovely blue seas
The Mull of Kintyre for me

Chorus

All you need to do now is get the YBW Choir to record it for YouTube.

If it doesn't turn out well they can play it through the trumpet of the foghorn to keep mariners away, so your efforts won't be wasted.

Sounds like chaos. I hope that no one doing West Highland Week turns up on Friday expecting to get through for the Sunday start. We went round the Mull yesterday in the rain - didn't see anything until well past Gigha!

Latest update.Wed. 25/7/18
It is intended that transit by short term berth holders should cease after Sundays high tide window.
They have not decided what to do about us long term bertholders, probably buy us all berths at Ardfern? Ha ha!

How much would you and Hugh charge to crew me round the Mull?

I was hoping to go through on the 2nd, 3rd &/or 4th August.
Looks like I'll be taking the long way round unless we have a monsoon.

I'm heading round the MoK then too. Intend depart Gourock about 11am Thursday, anchor Sanda that nigh, set off round MoK 0600 Fri heading for Loch Spelve, Mull. We'll wave!

Loch Spelve? I have only been there once, and remember it only as a dismal place of good shelter. Mind you, we were riding out a storm there, which perhaps meant we didn't see it at it's best.

Is there any news of how Crinan Sealock will be operating. We are hoping to start transit for WHW (draft 1.5 m or less?). tomorrow starting during the Friday Ardrishaig open window. Exit HW Crinan is 18:04 Friday (will not make this) and 18:44 Saturday. Only problem being that they will closed and no overtime has been mentioned previously!
Many thanks in advance for any local knowledge.

Angus, it is very unlikely that you will make it through in time for the start of WHYW if you get into the canal on Friday morning. The biggest issue is that the tides aren't aligning well with working hours on the Crinan end - add to the requirement for you to have a partner boat to travel through the canal with you. You may get in, but find yourself neaped at the exit.

Very many thanks for that, we are aware of that and it is unfortunate. Another issue is exiting Crinan at HW (approaching springs) will make the Dorus Mhor less than ideal. It is a shame that the canal could have not managed their water better in the recent past. It an elderly 28 foot wooden boat, so MoK not ideal, perhaps the 40 footers should have gone that way, with their deep draughts:-(

But the mussel farm there is an attraction. I'm going for a feed of Inverlussa Mussels. There were 30 or so boats there last year for the feast! https://www.inverlussa.com/about-us/mussel-farm

Donna (the manager) has promised that working hours at Crinan sealock will be extended to cover the high tide window up until Sunday, I presume you will only be able to lock out not in.
