Update on Yachting Monthly and PBO

Ganter,I do hope that isnt aimed at me. As someone coming from a mixed race background of seafarers who settled only mile from where i now live, and yards from where we now launch our boats the Uncle Tom moniker is not one you might want to pin on any of us if you happened to be in the same room. My lineage, though it may not be whiter than white has every generation serving till this day in HM forces. "UNCLE TOM" has deep resonant prejudice, and as the first male of my lot to look totally white I have seen the crap my mother, cousins, and sister had to put up wityh. Keep your uncle tom stuff in the back of your throat with rest of your bile

I'm guessing, based on context, that Ganter is actually referring to St Thomas a Cunliffe, well known in this parish and as a former contributor to the magazine this thread was once discussing.

Absolutely as newtothis states:

This is a reference to Tom Cunliffe, Seafarer, Yachtmaster, Master Of The Seas and affectionately referred to around here as Uncle Tom.

Absolutely nothing to do with you Solentclown.

So keep your racist inferences to yourself.

I know of Tom Cunliffe too, but following on direct from my post, and with the many connotations of the phrase, maybe you should come to my neck of the woods and come tell me where to stick my inferences in person. I may have jumped the gun. I think you are only up the way from us, so we could meet say in the jolly sailor, have a stand up fist fight, arant, a beer, a tumble and a fumble and fall in love all over again as the sun went down. And if you are sailing mad i could show you over 200 years of logs and diaries of free men of Barbados who made their way in the world plying their trade across the globe, and settled here in the Solent. So forgive me for being nervy. Uncle tom is a common insult.

yes you are right, I am in fact an arse.

I believe that there is untapped potential for the magazines in France. Most boaters would have no problem in reading English and that would open a much wider market for advertisers.

But not at 50% more than the (better ?) French magazines. €9.90 per mag...!!

Thanks for this opportunity to comment on the magazine.

I've been a subscriber to PBO for about four or five years. This is not really about the content which others have commented on well, but a couple of things that annoy are:

1.I've always found it archaic that access to past articles is through a paid photocopying service. At the Economist its standard practice that subscribers have online/included access to every article since 1997. Its a really valuable feature of the subscription.
2. Only apple users get online content included as part of their subscription, what about android or PC users?

Thanks

Excellent point

I am pretty sure I would subscribe to a printed copy again if there were on line access to archive material included.

I looked earlier today and it says that the archive service has been withdrawn which a shame as I often used it to find an article before searching my bookshelves. I hope they can do something positive with the mags, which I've always enjoyed reading, but cutting all the staff is a bad way to start.
