Update on Yachting Monthly and PBO

I have no tolerance for racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia, and I dislike seeing sailing linked to them online.

No. It should be a place to discuss sailing. Those who wish to indulge in discussion about how much they hate women / gay people / foreigners / ethnic minorities have, sadly, plenty of other places to do that.

But why have a forum that promotes extreme views? One witnesses perfectly good sailing talk exchanges in the other forums but the lounge was placed there to 'view rants' etc etc which inevitably gives rise to (moderated) extreme views.
You are a very regular visitor of the lounge I see, for what purpose?

So for all my friends on Mumsnet, I have simply disappeared. If they were to enquire, the answer would be, he broke the rules... but they would never be told what rule and for what action I was condemned. Such behaviour by an organisation bodes ill for free speech.

No private organisation is under any obligation whatsoever to give you - or me - a platform. Wordpress accounts are free.

Mumsnet and this place are open to public view from anywhere. Although you have to me registered to post a comment.
Your house is a private to you and conversation in your house remains private unless someone repeats it.

That is exactly which many/most organisations are much pickier about publically viewable comments than about private messages. If two Lounge members want to PM each other about whatever hate-filled nonsense is currently occupying their minds (sic) it doesn't matter much. As soon as they start spewing their bile in public it affects public perception of sailing and of Time Inc, whose negative reaction is therefore wholly justifiable.

How would you feel about a visitor to your house displaying in their bedroom window a poster for a political party or cause you dislike?

Nothing inevitable about it. The Lounge has become a haven for unpleasant people with no interest in sailing whatsoever.

Sick fascination combined with knowing the enemy.

Thought as a long time reader and the fact I grew up reading YM and PBO etc I'd give an insight as to what I'd think would be good ideas to feature.
What like to read are boat tests, gear tests and other readers stories and trips.
Yes I would like to see about the Vendee globe et al - it does interest me.
I really like the boat reviews, especially the online You tube ones Chris Beeson does - his style and manner are very watchable and honest.
Articles are best practice and navigation questions etc are all very good and so is the quiz.
Secondhand boat reviews are probably more important than new boats.
I know it costs but keep the advertisers advertising the second hand boats and gear.
Merge PBO and YM - a bigger mag from doing that and I will continue my subscription.
Hope this helps

Otherwise keep the good work up and long live the boating magazine fraternity!

They are at perfect liberty to do so. Their forums, their rules.

Free speech is not a right to post irrelevant bigoted nonsense on privately owned forums

The true bigots are the ones who cant tolerate differing views and attempt to shut them down without reasoned arguments.

Normally by shouting things like racist/xenophobe etc.

And then they try to pass themselves off as decent tolerant types, having just revealed themselves as the opposite.

I guess it's just an unfortunate fact that many people are slaves to the orthodoxy of the day.

No one is trying to shut down your speech to free speech. We're just bored with what you're saying and wish you would take it somewhere else. It really has nothing to do with this thread or even this forum. Go find an outlet for embittered free-speech warriors, where I'm sure you'll be accepted with open arms.
I believe it's called the Lounge.

No, the true bigots are the ones who are truly bigoted and attempt to defend racism, sexism, homophobia and so on as bold challenges to the orthodoxy of the day. It's curious what fragile souls they so often turn out to be when they receive any criticism. It's almost as if they can dish it out but can't take it.

There is absolutely no reason why Time Inc should feel obliged to host material which damages its reputation.

Well said. One caveat: I think it is germane here, because we have been asked for our comments on the future of the magazines, and I think it reasonable to point out that having the magazines closely associated with a forum which is openly hostile to large sections of the population may not be a sensible route to improved sales figures.

Free Speech is:

1) A right guaranteed in the Constitution of the USA. Not the UK.
2) The right to say things without the government imprisoning (or fining, executing, etc) you for them. It's not a compulsion on other individuals to listen, nor on any entity to provide you with a free megaphone to say it through.

Why? If you came into my house and behaved in ways or said things I found unacceptable, I'd throw you out. My house, my rules. Mumsnet has its own set of rules, as does YBW; if you break them - and that is for them to decide - they can cut you off. If you don't like the rules, setting up a bulletin board where you can set the agenda is very easy.
Free speech has never been easier. Anyone can say what they like on their own blog/tweets/facebook. But you don't get to walk into an Arsenal pub and start bigging up Spurs, although you're welcome to give it a try.

+1. YBW is a forum hosted by the publishers, and we need to respect their rules or go elsewhere.
Rants about politics, religion or football rarely achieve anything except pain

Pot and black here?

My two penne th is more gear reviews, cut new boat reviews down and concentrate on second hand boats, practical tips, cruising experiences.
I would enjoy the amalgamation of ym and practical boat owner but also wary of (as my previous post) the 'new special price' which always seems to follow.
I've been a subscriber to both Ym and Pbo for donkeys years ending my Ym subs last year and contemplating to end Pbo when my subscription ends. This dicision is based on content which has reduced over the years.
I hope sincerely that the magazines continue but I feel possibly their days are numbered.
I empathise with the editorial staff as sailing is primarily an old peoples pastime who will all soon be in their box to be replaced by who? The young people now are worrying about maintaining a home with both partners working to sustain that home They don't have funds to 'waste' on boating!

Our club subscribes to the usual four magazines YM,Pbo, Yw & Sailing today.
YM & PBo have been the same for years & hardly anyone bothers to do any more than flip tiredly through them for a few minutes & put them back on the rack. I certainly wouldnt buy any of them.

I used to read PBO in the dentist's waiting room. A slightly nostalgic thought for me as long after I'd left home I kept going to the same surgery and it gave me a chance to see what project my father was considering as they were always his magazines that my mother had "tidied' and donated to the dentist and they would still have his annotations in the margins.

Certainly luckier than me, all we had in the waiting room was woman's realm and woman's own:D
