I'm planning a visit to the top of my mast in the near future (bulbs gone)
what worries me is there any possibility of a boat "tipping" all the way over when at the top or am I being silly? I am 13 stones and I.m sure that adds up to quite a bit of leverage when at the top, my boat is only 26 feet long with a fin keel just over 2000lbs and a beam of 9' 6" not sure of mast height but I'm sure that would affect things as well. I know if the mast stayed vertical it would be ok but I'm thinking if it was healed or it started to sway. Is there any way to work out stability? Anyone know of any disasterous experiences (to put my mind at rest?)

Go for it and make sure somone has a camcorder. The boat shouldnt topple, but the look on your face!? Just think how much pressure the wind puts on the top of your mast and it does'nt upskittle...

If you're near other pontoons, take a line from the masthead to a pontoon on either side to brace it.

G'day Ian,

I had to go aloft to retrieve the mast head spinnaker halyard, we were in full race mode and about third place at the time, hooked onto the second headsail halyard and shot up, still under full sail, I was all walking up the mainsail, no problem at all. This was fin keeler, 28 foot, and I was at least 13 stone at the time.

Be more concerned about the equipment that is supporting you, make sure you have a second safety line and all should be just fine..........

I weigh 12 stone and have regularly been up the mast of my last boat - a 23' fin keeler - no problems. Just don't let the people doing the hauling answer their mobile phones while you're up there :)
