University sailing

Granddaughter is competing in the BUCSA keelboat championship.
I thought I would find out a bit about it.
I clicked on the web page and it is in Latin!
That's the way to keep the plebs in place.

Latin was a compulsory subject at my school (a state grammar school) up to O-level. That was in the late 60s! However, with hindsight, it's one of the few O-levels (other than those that fed into my eventual degree studies) that I find consistently useful in everyday life. Further, it means I can at least make a pretty good guess what Italian and Spanish texts say (both are Latin with 2000 years evolution!)

A long way from a few wet in dinghies I recall -I do remember seeing Soton practicising match racing in small day boats when we went for a test sail once -not certain the broker appreciated their proximity to us .

In my school it was compulsory to learn Greek and Latin not very useful for sailing but useful for science and other languages

You've just made me realise that it's 18 years since I sailed in that event... And that's made me feel old. In fact, it was asking for tips sailing the Sunsail 37s that occasioned my first post on this forum. So it has a lot to answer for!

And my old uni aren't there this year....

And it's 48 years since I was eligible (I didn't sail at university)! You're a mere spring chicken ????

Although attached to London University, I never sailed with them but we had our own regatta using their boats. These were 12 sq m Sharpies based at Burnham. They had a gunter rig with clapped-out sails and although designed for a crew of two, we filled them with nurses for ballast and made the best of it. I could say that I won three years out of four but I'm too modest.

I'm sure that when I was that age, I could have thought of better things to do with nurses...

And it would not have involved telling them they were there for ballast!

I was very young at the time. In retrospect, I think that they were better fitted for ballast than romance because I have no mental picture of any of them, so they can’t have occupied much of my attention, which was clearly focussed on winning. The professor of surgery was not amused when I beat him.

Sadly fog and lack of wind has got the better of the last day sailing, so yesterday's results are the final ones I believe. So good result - Dan second out of 15.

Congratulations to Plymouth Uni for first place.

Yes, pleased with that result. The Plymouth boat results were outstanding.
