Who is this extra crew member?

A friend of mine having hired a crew to take his boat (38ft Colvic T/Yacht) to Spain decided to join them. Leaving Port Solent bound for Jersey where they were to buy more nav. equipment for the trip, the delivery crew didn’t wait for a weather window and even though it was blowing F7/8 just went.
Halfway across the channel with the sea on the starb`d beam the boat was in trouble and had suffered 3 semi knockdowns. Calling a passing ship on 16 they got a course for Cherbourg and limped in.
I said to my friend, weren`t you scared, Yes he said I was at my wits end but then the strangest thing happened, sitting in the corner of the saloon was a woman dressed all in black with a black hood and when she smiled at me all my fear seemed to drain away. She stayed with us until we reached Cherbourg then she was gone.
Another friend that I told this story to said Yes same thing happened to him only it was a tall chap in a pair of overalls leaning on the stern rail smoking a park drive, again in bad sea conditions and again when he appeared there was no more fear.

Just wondered if anyone here has either experienced this or knows anyone that has.

Crowhurst had his passenger and many lone yachtsmen have an extra crew member after leaving harbour, in fact it seems the norm

I find it fascinating though I`m sure its just a trick of the mind.
At least I hope it is.

Been watching too many Scottish Widows TV adverts by any chance?

Your mind plays funny tricks on you when you are tired and under pressure. I've heard similar stories about troops being led to safety by a mysterious stranger and of people trapped on mountains, in bad weather, being comforted by an unknown visitor.

The romantic in me would like to think that it's some kind of guardian angel, but I think it's more likely to be hallucination, brought on by extreme conditions and exhaustion.

If it were caused by recreational drugs, the mysterious stranger would probably have been a six foot lobster, smoking a cheroot. ;-)

Erm at the risk of getting the piss taken out of me.. yet again .. I've had two similar experiences, but never caught full sight of the "presence" but was very aware of it at my right hand side out of the corner of my eye. Once winter climbing and once sailing, both times potentially serious situations.

My son also had a 'friend' who he played with and not just in a child game fashion. We told some local people about this and they explained that a little boy had died behind our house during a snow storm over 100 years previously and his spirit came to play but only on warm days!? Spooky eh?
