We were moored on a buoy in the Beaulieu River last week with our underwater lights on. Later on that evening we were treated to a seal playing in our underwater lights hunting the fish that were attracted to the lights. It was a magical experience.
Not for the fish it wasn't :)
But I get your point and you're right. I once had the lights on in Ajaccio old harbour, and was treated to a display of octopuses having a party/dance.
Another time I had them on in the evening inside Girolata harbour, moored to a buoy. Idyllic evening, with plenty of folks from other boats swimming. I turned them off at about 23h00 for an early night, and immediately heard people shouting "Please turn your lights back on mister!". It developed into a big party where the swimmers, none of whom I knew, were shouting out song requests to my stewardess who then played them on the boat's music system, with the lights doing a sound-to-light thing. So much for early night - think I got to bed 2am :). Fun-loving people like UWLs :)

Well that proves underwater lights are hazardous to fish. Ban them I say.

Why did you have to raise the matter? We're out next year for some planned maintenance and Coppercoat, I find myself researching UW lighting as a couple below the waterline at the stern wouldn't harm, would it😎
Let us know what lights you go for. They're terrible things but I'm tempted if there are reliable ones out there for not too 'BAT' (boat added tax) prices.

We all have struggled to some degree or other .It’s part of the fun .We ( mates / lads trip ) have even clambered aboard some others , a FR guys ITAMA ! Woke them up.

Beer goggles +++ , we lost our ability to read transom names .
I assume you must just have your boat name in vinyl. Might be worth getting in done in stainless steel or something that stands proud which will work for you more like braille in such circumstances :)

I have UW lights and wouldn’t want a boat without them. My first reason was because they look cool but as a newbie at this boating malarkey i hadn’t considered the safety aspect for night boarding from tender, however that is the aspect from which i now state i would not own a boat without them.

And they do look bloody cool too
