I'm after a camera to be able to inspect the underneath of Play d'eau. A 'camera on a stick' to look at, for example, stern gear.
Any recommendations?

Now that's just made me think! I bought a waterproof camera (Panasonic Lumix) recently for use on the boat, I shall be constructing a similar plastic pipe arrangement now!

It wold be really useful if you see what the camera is seeing as it sees it - a remote video screen? Does this make sense?

A Gopro Hero with a wifi connection to an ipad should do the trick of monitoring what you see under water. I just couldn't get it to work when I needed it, maybe someone else here has tried with better luck.

I've had one of these from Maplin for many years, not exactly Discovery HD TV but certainly good enough for seeing condition of stern gear / finding stuff you dropped overboard at the marina etc.

They are apparently out stock at the moment but I'm sure that will change. Quite useful as it has inbuilt rechargeable battery so very portable around the boat/marina.

I bought one of these for my son's trawler incident.

It is an impressive piece of kit but we never used it as we found the leak in a more exciting fashion!
I note it is no longer available but there may be others.

Yes, tape it to the end of the boat hook. Have also just slung it over the back and towed gently in a dinghy for a sort of Jacques Cousteau effect!

Sounds perfect. Now to ask Maplin if it's gone permanently or just temp out of stock. Otherwise I suspect it's back to the drawing board!

I have a 5m lead and tape it to the end of a boathook. Then I can use the laptop in the cockpit and inspect the prop as required. It's a cheap option and not high res but does the job OK, providing there's enough light around. In the murky East Coast waters this can be an issue on dull days. And don't expect the inbuilt LEDs to light up anything more than a couple of cm away. Next time I may experiment with a waterproof LED torch taped to the other side of the boathook...

Any number of small cameras on the end of a wire for a few quid on eBay. Many claim to be waterproof. Also small screens, either 12v (intended for car reversing cameras and the like) or with batteries and a power socket for the camera, intended for CCTV installers to check field of view etc while up a ladder. I put these together into an underwater inspection camera for about £25, though I haven't used it in anger yet. I do wonder how easy it would be to actually manoeuvre a camera on a pole into a position where it can see anything useful. Easier in clear Channel Island water, I guess

Experience so far is that it's difficult to tape a cheap camera to a boathook at the correct angle first time - in fact it takes a few goes. An easily adjustable bracket would be valuable... Also, make sure the screen you use is good in bright sunlight - my toughbook screen is useless outside so had to swap to a shiny screen netbook.
