Ultra Anchor

Just to let you know i have the new anchor fitted it is now the stainless 32kg. Lewmar will be taking some photos soon also i have to give them feedback
Stainless ! I bet it looks good. I’m just here with my trusty galvanised Rocna

But I’m very interested in your experience with the Epsilon. I’ve already been dropping hints to the Admiral, my best one was about the limited life expectancy of the modern anchor. Next I’ll tell her that we have to sell it quickly before the factory recall. I’ll let the forum know which one works the best ????‍♂️

Hi, was wondering if you have any real world feedback on the Epsilon? We have the original 16kg Delta on our princess V45 and am looking to get something a bit more ‘reliable’ as we have dragged on occasion (med, always sand)….am considering the 20kg Epsilon. Appreciate any advice please!!

We have not had a chance to anchor out yet but people have looked at it and said that’s it looks very much like the ultra Hopefully we will be able to get to use it soon

Any merit in upgrading the chain size from 8mm to 10mm? Not looking to spend money unecessarily but am assuming the extra chain weight would help…..but it means changing the gyspy as well so looking at £500+ for chain and gypsy…..any opinions/experiences welcome!!

Hi Terry, just following up again to see if you have any feedback. In any case, we bought a 25kg galv Epsilon and will be fitting it in a couple of weeks when we get out to our boat….but curious if you have tried yours yet?

Personally I think a 16kg anchor on 8mm is way too small if you intend to spend many nights on anchor. I wouldn’t be sleeping at all especially if the wind gets up so think of the extra money being amortized over all those extra hours of sleep :).

Thanks and agree. For now we’ve got a 25kg Epsilon to replace the small Delta, but not changing the chain yet. Will have that on next years list as it means also changing the gypsy and reworking the bow roller setup-neither the time nor budget this year! But atleast the larger-and hopefully better design-anchor will help a lot for this season :)

If an increase in chain size, from 6mm to 8mm or 8mm to 10mm (and especially a 15kg anchor on 8mm chain) over average anchoring experiences makes a significance improvement to the performance of an anchor - then there is something wrong with the anchor. :(

But YBW is hungry for feed back on the performance of the Epsilon.

We are coming to the end of 4 weeks cruising the Balearics and have been using our new 25kg Epsilon/Ultra flip swivel/8mm galv chain combo and no complaints at all. The Epsilon needs to be set properly but once in it does not seem to move albeit the conditions have not been overly challenging. But for us the real star is the Ultra swivel-great piece of kit?
Next year will upgrade to 10mm chain and new gypsy.

For anyone interested, the YouTube channel below uploads a tremendous amount of anchor tests. In anchor test video #100 he included an overall summary of many anchors tested. As mentioned in the video, there are very many different important parameters in comparing anchors so any single test will probably never be accurate. However, I think his overall approach is quite thorough so can be an interesting watch at times.

This guy gives good, well researched, unbiased information, and has identified a new contender as the anchor of choice for those who want great holding power but neither like the look, or have the bowsprit capabilities to cope with the roll-bar style anchor.
The Sarca Excel is the one to watch, it not only performs extremely well, but actually looks like a proper anchor.
