I have just sourced
Radar 18 inch radome 2.2 kw 24 nm monochrome 6 inch LCD screen
Fish finder, log, temp including through hull transducer + GPS chartplotter etc colour 6 inch screen (all in one)
DSC radio
All leading brand names in america for $1690 dollars with free shipping
This should equate to approx £900
Can anyone point me to a dealer in the UK who could match this as my first preference is to buy here.

With VAT you are looking at around £1050 (depending on exhcange rate at transaction time) and if they decide to charge duty it could be another £200.

Buying from the States is always a gamble.

When all charges are levied you often find that you pay £1 per $1 by the time it's in your possession.

Do you feel lucky?

Without specifics it's hard to comment BUT -

Radars from the USA have been known to have shorter cable lengths than those supplied in the UK, don't know why and cannot remember who.

DSC radios supplied for leisure use will not meet EU DSC standards.

The carrier will collect the duty and vat on behalf of HMG. If you use the Post Office you may get away with it, but it depends on your supplier.

If the warranty is on a return-to-supplier basis you will have to meet those costs. Unless you want to pay the duty and vat a second time you will HAVE to use the services of a freight forwarder to make sure the goods can be re-imported without these charges. This will increase carriage charges both ways.

This is precisely the problem. No-one could guarantee that you would not incur VAT at point of entry irrespective of the blurb on the site you bought it from. Same goes for duty. It's a gamble. You win some you lose some. The more often you buy from the USA the more likey you are to fall foul sooner or later. If it happens on a big order it will be painful!

Arent there different vat rates on different items. sorry for the ignorance but I am a consumer and only see the end price I dont check the vat paid as it makes no difference if I have to pay it anyway.

I'm beginning to think this is a wind-up, am I being slow here? For a man (?) taking so much trouble to try and avoid UK taxes and so informed at the currency market you appear particularly unaware of vat.

Yes there are different levels of vat, but only for kid clothes, food, heating oil, the diesel for your boat etc. Consumer items are all 17.5%.

Thanks for that. It is not a wind up. It is like my pay I dont care how much I earn only how much reaches my bank account. Anyway the reason for my post was to find out where in UK I could come close to the amounts I originally quoted.

Youi could always look at eBay - there are often good buys on there BUT some do come from the US - so beware about extra cgarges etc.

Re: UK over-pricing but not for winches ??

Comparisons with USA always seem to show cheaper prices for electronics. I have been looking for soem new winches but interestingly the prices on USA websites seem to be about the same as the UK, before you add VAT, therefore in practice considerably more expensive once VAT, carriage and possibly duty is considered. Or does anyone out there know where more heavily discounted winches can be found in the USA.
