I heard two days ago that 10 year old tyres on PSVs and heavy goods will be an MOT fail in 2021.
As commercial vehicles, I suspect that tyres would be worn out well before 10 years of use.
I'm reasonably sure that this will not effect domestic users, but may be a sign of whats to come.
I don't know if this will effect trailers in any way.
Half a story I know, but this might be of interest to some.
Don't shoot the messenger.
Cheers.

Also posted in the tyre thread in the 'lounge'.

I'd ban them for trailers. I've seen a good few caravans and other trailers with scarily old, cracked tyres.

They'll still be useful to hang outside your boat to discourage rafting.
It is concern regarding boat trailer tyres that prompted me to post this subject.
I agree with you on this,I've seen loads more trailer tyres with unworn excellent tread remaining, but are scrap due to cracking, than trailers tyres with a good carcass and 'bald' tread.
Cheers

I agree, I should have put a smiley. I'd be upset if a 50 footer wanted to raft outside me, because, at 24 feet, I'd just be a big. slightly crunchy fender, but I've never discouraged a sensible sized boat.
Ha, I should have put a smiley as I knew it was tongue in cheek....funny though!

Recommendation for caravan and trailer tyres has been 7 years for a long time anyway so nothing changes for the conscientious. Of course there will always be people that disregard these things.

I have a brand new and unused Michelin X for a Citroën 2CV lying around. It has never been on a wheel or even out of doors. I wonder if it would be OK to use? It's dated about thirty years ago ...

There are a lot of dinghy trailers out there with quite old tyres.
I bought a dinghy last year, it came with tyres so old they didn't even seem to have a date mark, but having inner tubes dates them as pretty ancient?
As I needed to do a motorway stretch, I changed the wheels.
Because my dinghy trailers and box trailer don't do much mileahge any more, I keep one decent pair of wheels and tyres and swap them around.
You can get a new pair of wheels and tyres in 400x8 for about £45. I end up buying a new pair every time I change boats.
I've had trailer tyre failure, it was scary, nearly had the car off the road. And that was a lightweight dinghy.

Old trailer tyres are good for dinghy trolleys though, the wheelbarrow tyres you often get these days are terrible plasticky things that can fail in a season.

So what about space saver tyres
How long are they good for kept in a nice dry dark place under the floor ?
Good question.
But if it's any help, I think the 15 year old tyres on my old motorbike wheels have gone hard and slippery after being in the loft for 14 of those years.
I guess a space saver is restricted on speed anyway and probably a harder compound that won't age so badly.

I bought an Ifor williams trailer thankfully i got it at a reasonable price, picked it up in Devon looked at the tyres and drove to the nearest tyre fitters which was a local chain had 2 of the worst changed and then onto their next branch to replace a third one, sidewalls cracked cords showing through or just bald. Lucky i didnt get stopped.
