Two boats on fire in swanwick marina.

Just been down to Swanwick Marina and I see that the S28 is no longer there....anyone know where she has been moved to? If she has been written-off, then the Sirius 36 will certainly be the same......such a shame for the owners of both boats, but hope they can find replacement boats soon, so that they can, hopefully, enjoy the coming season.

It was here this morning when I drove past.

Yep - Matt the boat polisher was working on Phoebe when the fire broke out, just a couple of boats away. He says she is fine thank goodness. I really feel for the bloke on Layla, he was extremely boat proud (in a good way) - always working on her

Well nearly two years down the road and I do not feel for the owner of Layla at all. To date he has not even apologised for what is at best sheer negligence. The lack of any form of apology hurts.

Interestingly my old S28 has been rebuilt and since sold. I suspect that the new owners were not made aware that she was previously a total loss?

In my eyes I think this is another reason why there should be a form of hpi for boats just like cars, motorbikes, vans, motorhome's ect ect.

A few years ago I saw near Dublin in a boatyard a 33ft twin keel yacht and it interested me as it looked like a boat I had seen in Dickies at Bangor in Wales having the keel refitted as it had collapsed due to (clearly visible only 6mm thick ) very poor layup around the keel support area. The owner was aboard and a friendly sort and it was clear from his account of recently buying the boat from wales that it was the same boat although having a name change. He was so pleased with his boat I could not dent his bubble but I always wondered whether the boatyard had just repaired the keel that failed or whether they had re enforced the other one also and whether I should have said anything. A boat register of boat write offs would identify this sort of problem. In a similar fashion there will be a lot of flood damaged cars on the market not all of which will be declared as reclaimed.

If a boat has been repaired passed the point a surveyor can pick up the damage is it relevant still though? I say this because I only found out by chance investigation during the buying process that my boat had been stolen previously, run aground and holed. Even forearmed with this knowlege we (myself and broker because it was their stock) and surveyor could not readily identify the site of damage or repairs during the survey and trust me, we looked very hard. It's only after getting to know the boat intimately that I found a very slight discolouration in the gel coat on the starboard side where the old meets new tend weather / dirty unevenly and goes with a clean and polish.
