Concerto’s latest post had me
musing about television on board.

I love not having TV on my boat; I see it as a haven from the blasted gogglebox, where in our leisure moments we can read, play cards or bananagram, or even just talk. I really can’t imagine ever wanting to install a set on board.

How about you chaps ?

Everyone uses their boat differently. Personally we use it as a place to relax, escape from work and the day to day rat race so no TV on ours.

I have a portable projector (Anker Nebula) instead. Battery powered and out of sight but there when we need it. Another advantage is we can use it in the cockpit and it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker.

Had a tv someone gave us as they didn’t think it right we didn’t have one.Spent many a windy night shouting through the hatch “and now,how is it”?. Adjusting the Ariel tied to the main halliard

? you’ve got the TV. Now you just need another boat….

I haven't had any TV anywhere for over 20 years. Having occasionally looked at them in hotels I don't feel that I am missing anything. I get news on the net.
OTOH there was a yacht architect (Jeremy Rogers ? ) who said that while world cruising after a while you get tired of looking at palm trees in the evening and it's nice to watch a video now and again.

Does a 40 inch fit in a 20 footer?

We had a 22” which connected to a to antenna and acted as a plotter repeater downstairs. Used that to go through passage plan to try and get kids vaguely engaged by plan for the next day. Only used tv in uk not in med (Italian not good enough). just replaced it with 24” smart tv which has Netflix and Amazon prime and now we watch the odd film as a family if it’s poor weather out cos it’s better for our eyes than peering at a tablet. We never have “regular tv” on when aboard - not a rule, just not a habit we get into.

Same here, not had a TV at home for over a decade, living on boats taught me the beauty of a life without one so its the last place I'd install one. But I do watch video on computers quite often. Nothing wrong with the video format, its the incessant nature of TV programming that's the problem.

I hear in France there is much more awareness of the harm done to kids by screen time and its much more common to be without a TV, don't know if thats true?

We had a 19” set with a digital mobile aerial that worked well in most but not all places. In time we used it less but we had a memorable few days in Cherbourg watching the Jubilee on French TV. They had devoted a channel for the whole two or three days, with a lot of interesting discussion and an excellent showing of the river pageant. I can’t help feeling guilty about it though. Friends had no compunction about their satellite TV, which was a consolation to her in the middle of the North Sea.

I’ve heard that story. But pretty sure it wasn’t Jeremy.
