I am a sailing enthusiast and was hoping to watch this important sporting event on television, but it seems that BBC Sport is more interested in dedicating its airtime to interviewing people in stupid costumes in the great north jog.

Its an insult, that they only give 40 minutes of television to the whole event and even less to an individual race, also I have to wait 5 whole days to see Team GBR boys racing.

Sailing is one of the largest participation sports in the country with millions of pounds tied up in it.

When is the BBC going to wake up?

I think it is time that we all put some pressure on them!!

Last night was 7.00pm was good on eurosport. One hour of the LV cup and on most nights for the next few weeks. Especially good as I receive it on an old analogue system with no SKY fees. Appeals to the thrifty Scotsman in me.
An analogue dish and box can be picked up for under £25 in most free add papers. The BBC coverage is pathetic in comparison.

You can't blame them for covering the Great North Run. It's the biggest participant sporting event in Northern Europe! Bigger than the London Marathon, far bigger than RTI.

To answer both the current replies, the great north run is not a *real sporting event* its basicly a jog round the park, anybody who is fit can easily do it, by defualt the bbc feel they must cover it, if I am honest the coverage is shit.... "what was the inspiration for your outfit":- Suzi Perry. I think it was, this went on for hours...

To answer the second post, why the f*** should I not get a decent programme on terestrial TV considering the fact I pay a license fee, secondly we cant get satelite where we live due a number of technical and moral reasons, however I am just astounded by the complete sh**e the BBC is doing, especially as they and GBR Challenge where dishing out heavy duty press releases several months ago saying they had *secured* THE rights to it>? 10 minutes is all I saw od actual racing, that al they got, pants!!, and I still have to wait another 5 days to see my country competing in an International sporting event which has more money in than a lot of British sports.

There is no defence for the BBC's total neglect for us boaties!!

Lets put some pressure on them and see what we can get!!

May I say with a certain smugness that they are showing it live here in NZ. Trouble is that I ended up with a blobbed out weekend,(all those things I was meant to do!)
Its good to see GB with a win under their belt.

I couldn't agree more. The level of coverage is pathetic considering:

* The UK is supposed to be one of the foremost sailing nations in the world
* This is the first time we've entered the Cup for over 15 years (contradiction there!)
* The BBC trumpeted about their 'exclusive' TV coverage rights like mad.

So, when GBR beat Orcale in one of the best races so far in the LV series, a result that can only be considered a major upset, BBC coverage on the News (including News24, the dedicated BBC News channel that can't trot out the 'fit into the schedule' excuse) is limited to a single sentance at the end of the sport coverage, without even so much as a still picture. Let along actual footage, an interview etc.

Absolutely pathetic. Get writing...

Hope someone reads this, as I think this post has been here a while and I've only just come on and read it.
I am flabergasted that no TV company has taken any interest in the Americas cup. I watched a pathetic show on too late one Thursday night hosted by Peter Snow. He was explaining a few things in layman's terms and we laughed at that when my partner said,'Well I don't know why he's explaining that because anyone not interested in sailing will not be watching at this hour!!
It is such a shame, that a win by GBR hasn't even been mentioned in passing on ANY news programme that I've seen or heard on the TV or radio!
I was in Auckland when the lads were practicing, they deserve some support from their country. Does the BBC understand what a monumental thing it is for us to have a British challenge?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

i think to a degree you are right
prob is less coverage means less people will care
not everyone regards this as monumental but if noone gets to see it ( could not be bothered staying up that late to see it

it is v elite even in the sailing world. so not of interest even to all of the sailing community.

but i agree i would like to see some action on tv ( terestrial one of the four channels) and it may lead to more interest.

good luck to gbr anyway.

Come on brain.get this over and i can go back to killing you with beer

Worse here!

In the Netherlands there are virtually no reports on sailing on the national TV. One of the commercial stations (SBS6) is now broadcasting a weekly sailing magazine, but they broadcast it on sunday mornings when every proper sailing enthousiast is on his boat and is actually sailing. Perhaps just as well: the voice-over comments sound like they are explaining a 6-years old what everything is all about.

Tell me if BBC is bringing any free-to-air programs via satellite, and, if so, on which one. Living aboard we have a dish but ASTRA has only BBC World Service which is not much fun..And: no sailing.

Cheers

Re: Worse here!

Last time I checked, you could get about 10 free to air channels including BBC's and ITV's with a SKY Digibox and Minidish. Don't think your dish will work? Box is about £150 ish.

The coverage that's always bugged me on "main channel" sport in this country, is horse-racing. I can't actually find anyone that watches it! Maybe the Bookies are the ones to persuade in getting yacht racing recognised.

I think Peter Snow is very good and his weekly round up of the event is good. As i have said before, the Murray Walker of yacht racing.
And if GBR does well it will be billed as the British entry ..

Watched 1 hr on Eurosport tonight at 19:00 and saw GBR beaten badly but appealing.

Think it's on a 19:00 every night but haven't checked. V Good photography but rather indistinct american commentary.
