Given that turbocharged engines dont take kindly to being run at low speeds, is it possible/practical to de-turbo engines?
I am seeing several boats which would suit me well on the Thames but they all have turbos!

A mate of mine did that with a Moonraker / Perkins setup. From memory he made up plates to blank off where the Turbos were and re-routed the oil pipes.

Thats why I bought my 37 with Normally aspirated 120s and dont regret it.

See you in a week!

Yes it is possible. You may find it easier to alter the boost pressure, turn it right down, thereby keeping the engine still in one piece.

the turbo is not doing much at low speeds in any caase and wont bore glazing etc still happen if you use it at low speeds without turbo? To be honest I think glazed bores might be a bit of a myth anyway.

If you did remove them I think you'd have to consider recalibrating the fuel pumps, otherwise would they not run black smoke? and fyuel consumption better?

Presumably if you were going to restrict your use to the river the simplest answer would be to re-prop and bring the engine rev's up that way. However that would increase the fuel consumption and the noise factor. The advantage would be that when you sell it on, you can put the old props on and return the performance to the boat and not lose any money due to modifications. Resetting the pumps and removing the turbo's will do it but bang goes any waranty.
Best bet is to run on one engine alternating between locks and only use the second when manouvering. Not ideal but simple.

Last alternative.. buy the boat with the turbo's then come down to the coast and have a blast around with us. You know it make's sense

the pump and injectors will be set for a turbo, change the oil more often, there is a strange quirk, the better the oil the more chance of the bore glacing
