Hi folks,

I have removed a turbo from my port engine due to a coolant leak between the exhaust manifold and turbo. I have the new gasket kit ready to go.

Removing was a pain due to limited access (VP TAMD41A). 3 of the 4 nuts came off, and the stud came loose on the 4th but I managed to get of of so all good there. I plan to clean up the threads and refit. What do the experts use to retorque the nuts as you can't get a socket on it. Would a standard shape 15mm crows foot plus torque wrench do the trick?

Also, I would value input on how the turbo looks. there is not play on the compressor wheel, or other but there is a bit of soot. It spins freely but doesn't run on it's own (if that makes sense). See this video for clarity.

Here are pics of both sides.

I have never clapped eyes on a turbo in the flesh so would appreciate some opinions from those who have seen these things many times before. Do I refit, refurb, clean (please don't say replace).

Also, I assume I follow the steps in the manual for refitting, including the 'priming' with oil and running with starter motor to build oil pressure etc?

Thanks in advance,

D

Well, opinion only, on the exhaust side looks fine to me. Yes it has a bit of blade tip wear but it looks within tolerance. The spin is the same as mine when cold. The intake side looks different to mine as far as I can remember it but I dont think they are really subject to wear, in as much as the exhaust side wears first. I'd be happy to return it to service and check on it's boost readings. That will give you a better idea of it's state and how much life is left in it.

Ok folks. Sounds good. Will give it a lick of paint and reinstall.

Did you all follow the manual when reinstalling, as in priming with oil and building oil pressure or just throw it on and off you go?

Also, did anyone use a crowsfoot and torque wrench or just tighten up by feel?

Could any turbo place do it Paul? Parts easy to find etc. Also, cost? I am open to it if it could be done quickly...

?? There is a big difference between Mr Googlers and Mr Bowler's. Mr Googler's housing is shot , are you saying the same for Bowler? The latter whose turbo looks like mine and I'm making acceptable boost.

@volvopaul

Priming is a must. If you bought new, as I did, they even provide a syringe of oil to do it.

It's not new. However, I found a local turbo place that is familiar with this model and I am going to let them take a look at it for possible refurb, so maybe it'll become as new!

All depends on time and cost - as usual... Figure I may as well while it's off and the boat isn't going anywhere.

The manual says to leave bottom oil line off and run engine with starter motor only with stop solenoid off. Did you go that far or just fill with the syringe?

as Volvopaul said....change fan and exhaust housing. If you don’t get a new housing, you are pissing in the wind.

I had one “refurbed” with the housing cleaned up......waste of time.

The old elevated EGTs leading to exhaust turbo tip burn out .
Overloading , bottom fouling , stern gear mis hygiene .......you know the rest .

Another VP turbo thread .
