Trouble comes in threes !!

Elbow reapired ... new exhaust joining pipe ... new gasket .... all on board for guy to fit.

Then its just wait for Lift Gear to be sorted ...
I’ve got the parts and all the tools and rags in a box ready to go to the boat and service my stern thruster.....just waiting for that auspicious day...when I have got the energy

I lost the will to bend my body round impossibler marine installations a long time ago ... I can afford to pay someone else to do that !!

The sticking point is actually getting someone to turn up.....often the effort of the phone calls, the visits to the their workshop and the days spent waiting....makes doing it yourself more attractive

True ..

For my 25ft MS ... then I usually do work myself unless serious such as repairing keel ! But that is for two reasons ... 1. She sits at back of my house on her mooring ... 2. Once I get started - I quite enjoy the satisfaction of doing the job.

Lift gear is in place but haven't checked it yet.

Exhaust elbow - repair makes it impossibl;e to fit bolts ... unlikely they can grind back the excess without making it weak ... so I have ordered a new elbow ... causing my wallet to shriek in pain at VP price !!

Next boat needs to be outboard powered???

Out of interest what sort of cost?

I bought in at 4200 euros .... had a good season use.
Then :>
Had starter and circulation pump problems ... about 500 euros fixed.
This year had cockpit awning refurbed and extra openings added + hull polished .... still waiting bill - but expect about 1000 euros
Exhaust elbow welded - 70 euros but cannot refit as the weld has compromised the bolt holes ... ordered new at 740 euros + VAT delivered.
Lift pump repairs 100 euros
Labour ? About 300 euros all in.

So ... a 5000 to 6000 euro value boat (she's a one-off build Primor 24) has had what I term age issues on awning / starter and exhaust elbow.

I have no mooring fees .... as she usually sits on home mooring at back of house ...

So are such costings unnacceptable ??

new parts (and old for that mater) are they metal or plastic? if plastic I guess you can 3D print a few in ABS or PET-G for spares ;-)

nice, so the brushes were originally "pressed" onto the commutator (or however you call that) with two plastic pieces?
OK, assuming this motor works every now and again and for a few secs at a time, I don't expect that to heat up, but still...

??? I have no idea ... I do not actually know what those parts are ... as I did not see the motor dismantled.

All I know is that today - I tested it with him onsite and it works a treat !

first pic looks like there is a v.odd arrangement with the two 3D printed pieces holding the brushes to the commutator not perpendicularly to the copper surfaces. Never seen that before, but have only opened up a couple of dozen motors and mostly 230VAC. Whatever that is, the important thing is it works and that's enough!

V.

Another issue has come to light ... the engine installation must have been a bit hurried by previous owner as the wiring loom was very close to exhaust ... the outer conduit tubing holding the wires together has been melted - leaving the insulated wires inside exposed.

This will be remedied by plastic tubing ... basically garden hose ... spirally slit and then placed round the wiring loom .. and fixed away from exhaust. Why plastic hose ? Its thicker and more robust than putting new insulation material round the wires.

Wiring loom sorted ... and led clear of manifold.
Exhaust elbow fitted and check valve blanked
Lift motor all working

Ready to go ...

Parts cost about 1000 euro.
Labour costs 110 euro.

Yard cost probably about 80 euros.

I think that's very good considering the work done. The real expensive bit of course being the genuine VP exhaust elbow at 750 euros ..
