We stayed in Tyrrel Bay in Carriacou.
Really wasn't that bad at all- highest gust we saw was 37kt- but plenty of other boats dragging, colliding, getting entangled rigs or chains. I think the biggest danger is the other boats.
A couple of friends went in to the mangroves and had a very boring time. I might try that option if the need arises.

Our general approach is to keep the boat ready to move at all times, and keep watching the systems moving in.

You hit the nail on the head. Most problems occur because the vast majority have no idea how to anchor or prepare themselves for strong winds.
Keeping away from busy anchorages if strong winds are due is paramount. We are currently well North but will be heading South in the next 2 or 3 weeks. I would rather deal with 50kts and no boats than 35kts and loads of boats
