trolling - like fishing with a lure. Posting deliberately controversial thread in order to get heated exchange going.

dual id's - having more than one username

could this just have something to do with the disappearance of a thread started by 'france1'?

we can all ignore a bit of silliness but next time a genuine foreign poster may get taken for a troller and abused which is not doing anyone any favours.

Two points Kim.....

I have noticed a livening up recently on two or three of your forums. I hope that your declaration doesn't sanitize things too much. I wouldn't want the forums to return to their banality of a few years back. You could be walking a fine line here.

As to dual (or multipe for that matter) IDs, how are these achieved? Isn't it a requirement that you or one of your numerous assistants(!) emails the prospective new member's start -up password to them?

it is possible to set up a hotmail email address or have multiple email addresses from your isp thus allowing dual identities to be done

Re: Two points Kim.....

My numerous assistants...I enjoyed that.

It's one ID per email but if you own loads of email addies you can of course register more IDs -- well you can until I spot them.

This has nothing to do with throwing a bucket load of sick on sparky debate and everything to do with stopping outright anarchy. Personally think it's fair and reasonable for people to stick with recognisable IDs and a degree of discipline like that tends to mean genuine newbies do not get toasted to a crisp.

You will have a better memory than most of what happens when IDs start getting called into question...

Compared with another sailing forum that specialises in Anarchy, this one is most civilised. Cant comment on the other fora hosted here ...

No. I think you will find that that incident involved a "personal" friend of mine's husband ( he of foreign extraction)

Is it worth bothering?

As you surely know, anyone who has (just a little) knowledge of computers, cookies, ISPs, etc. can have as many IDs as he/she wants, without giving you any chance to spot him/her.
These cases, they could possibly be worth looking for, but the search is hopeless.
Whenever you can actually spot these behaviours, it means that they are sort of childish ones - as you say, just "thinking" to be smart.
Now, bothering with these cases, is that really worth your time?
Just a thought, but based on experience.

Re: Is it worth bothering?

Hmm
I think it isn't so much the issue of people getting dual identities - but the mischief/offence caused by some of them at times.
I suffer from abject split personality disorder myself and so I find life very difficult anyway and having lost my passport and trying to get to Tignes for a spot of the old suivez la piste on friday - I'm thinking I'll use one of my other ones, so all in all, dual id isn't such a bad thing as long as you can control it.
Noo - whitthefeck am ah daein here at 6 in ra mairnin discussin this wi youse ye English Jessie.
I never said that.

Really - I dont detect any of the same interests - I would be surprised if there were more than one or two who contributed to both locations.

Not so

I can assure you that at least 75% post here regularly and have done so long before the uprising of two or three years ago. Although I don't always agree with Kims' enthusiastic use of his delete key I do appreciate it is a better forum since the introduction of registration, it could be even better if people were refused the use of abbreviated pseudonyms /forums/images/icons/smile.gif and used their real names, Steve Cronin dosen't have a problem with it niether do I.

Re: Not so

I'd be very happy to see this forum insist on real names.Anyone recall the old Compuserve Sailing Forum? It was the only (sailing) game in town years ago and a real names rule worked well.
I speak as the very first Scuttlebutter to have a post pulled ,a couple of week after the original SB went on-line. :)
