I think there is quite a big difference between something presented as fiction, as the product of someone's imagination, and something purporting to be fact.
I felt a bit suspicious about T.R. until I read the one which talks about his childhood in Wales. The I was sure he was lying. I know the area and could not reconcile the narrative with the geography.
Dalton shows Tristran Jones as a liar. If one were listening to him in a pub I imagine that one might have him tagged as a spinner of ditties pretty quickly, though to say so could have got you a thump on the nose. His books make every effort to claim truth.

How sad. I too have adored his tales and was bamboozled into believing them real despite the obvious seafarer's exaggerations. His writing is always superb but the con-trick ruins it for me. Sure, I was sceptical about his basic geography of the Amazon, Arctic and one or two other basic "facts", but "A Steady Trade" rang so true. More fool I.

I go to bed now a sadder and wiser man, with the hitherto great TJ a much diminished and discredited force in my memory which makes me very sad.

Who's 'guest' then? I don't understand the concept on the forum. Maybe I should read the small print elsewhere.
This is an ancient thread and Guest would have been registered when he posted in 2007. However he has subsequently removed himself (or been banned) and his posts are now tagged as having been written by Guest.
