Was messing about with these over the weekend, just checking they still work and noticed oil bubbling to the surface. Looks like the oil is coming from the hose connection where it mets the ram.

Is this easy to fix – out of the water this winter.

Cheers

Peter

Its often the ram seals which are leaking and thats an out of the water jobbie I'm afraid. Best keep an eye on the hydraulic oil reservoir and get it done over winter

I guess there are different types but I'd be surprised if they were much different from each other. They are not oil filled other than maybe some residual oil which will work it's way down. The units are completely sealed so there is no maintenence possible other than to replace the rubber gaiters every two or so years.
Suggest in your case, to stop water getting in, to tighten up the gaiter jubilee clip a bit (not too much or you can knip the casing and retrict rod movement)
In the winter replace the gaiters.

Hummmm, no gaters, just a curled pipe - rubber I think going into the top of the ram, the oil is comming out of the joint between the pipe and the ram, but no clips to titghten up /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

I dont think David J is quite right. These are hydraulic rams, so oil filled. From your posts, it sounds like the leak is either from where the hose union screws into the ram (in which case, tighten it up and see if fixed - there should be a 10mm ish hexagon union nut to tighten) or from where the rubber hose is crimped into the metal union (in which case you need a new hose). Similar mechanics/principles to car brakes, though much less mission-critical.

Simple repairs, but boat needs to be out of water. Wait till end of year. Meantime, if oil leaks out just keep reservoir topped up. If alternatively water leaks in, the tabs will still work becos water is an ok hydraulic fluid. You will however be better changing the fluid completely at year end if it's gone watery

Maybe there are very different types but the ones I've experienced are the electric ones and the curled pipe would be the cable going in. I have a suspicion that your's is something completely different....some hydraulic mechanism??....dunno, someone else help please

This sounds more like it, still don't remember any nuts on the pipes look like they just go inside the top of the ram. They are elecy down to the motor / reservoir then hydraulic, hence oil coming out of the pipe. Port works fine starboard is the problem. They look like the QL system advertised in Mobo monthly etc.

My boat has hydraulic trim tabs as supplied by Volvo. If it is the hose this should be an easy job to do. You will have to take the boat out I expect but on mine the pipes feed from the pump through the transom and connect to the rams with small jubilee clips.

QL fixing bits

There's an on-line QL spare parts cat and detailed drawings. http://www.qlmarine.com/ql.asp

It looks like the hydraulic hoses attach to spigots with jubilee clips, not "proper" hydraulic unions that are crimped onto the hoses. The early models have a "connection kit for cylinder" avail as a spare part. Page 29 Later models less clear how they connect. Page28 Anyway, looks fairly easy to get the bits and fixit
