We're planning a trip up the Trent to Hull, and then to Whitby if time/weather permits in a couple of weeks, I know about the two weekly ABP charts for the area, and the Aegir that is forecast for that week, but is there anything else I should know, or avoid on the bit past Burton Stather and up to Hull marina and Spurn head that arent on the chart/tide tables? (apart from the commercial vessels, and any rogue fridges that might have found thier way down from the Ouse!)

Hi Steve
Mite get that pint off you then. we are on way to Hull on 23 or 24th August and then heading to Whitby and hopefully further north.
As usual the bouys over the whittons are on there usual move about and if crossing on reasonable low water care is needed past no 31 buoy which is now located about 15 yards form a sand bank and has a fierce tide running past it as you turn.
Other than that no other problems.

Regards

Ian

Wow Steve, It's not often we get Humber region cruising questions on this forum, I better make the most of this!

Confusing isn't it, the Trent flows North from Nottingham, so 'geographically' 'up' is actualy 'down' the Trent to Hull.

Going 'down' is the harder way, because you can't usually ride with the tide all the way. However in you boat, pushing the tide for the first couple of hours will be no problem. It's likely that you will have a last mooring at Torksey, but there is a new pontoon at Gainsborough, although it can be a tricky moor in a strong tide. After that, your only possible stops are to lock through at West Stockwith or Keadby. You can tie up along side a work boat near Keadby lock, but there's no shore access.

There is an anchor area close to the West bank, just up from Trent Falls, but I've never risked it. Once on the Humber, you could stop off at South Ferriby if you want (+- 3 hrs HW)(I'll buy you a pint in the 'Hope & Anchor' ) or continue on to Hull.

With your boat, you won't have any problems as long as you avoid low water any further South than Burton Stather. There is a large 'island' sand bank near the anchor point, and the normal channel is East of this. Of course commercial traffic here can be large and common.

Of course you need to time your arrival at Hull to be able to enter the marina, so it's likely that you will be passing Burton not too far off High Water.

Just keep your eye on the depths, and you can take the route South of Reeds Island, but of course keeping within the light floats will ensure plenty of water.

The return trip is much easier, as you can ride the tide all the way to Cromwell Lock if you like.

Forgot to mention, after 9 bottles of 'Old Peculiar' it bears an uncanny resemblance to the entry to the marina at Monaco !
