I have found a dinghy I like in Edinburgh - it is under 500 quid. To get it
down here (the Solent) using a transport company is about 300. Anyone
got any good ideas for getting it down here in a cheaper way?

It has a road trailer. and is about 12 ft long.

I cant think of any good ways - so I thought I would see if any of you had
any suggestions.

Might be worth trying to get this back down to you as a `return load`, ie. on a truck returning empty to the south having delivered its load up here.Phone round transport companies local to you but make sure that the dinghy is insured.

As I see it tow bar £100 (a guess but i can image it will be less)
950 mile round trip @ 15p/ mile £140
overnight @ £50

comes out close to 300 anyway

not including 14 odd hours of driving

Possible but not appealing.

Unless there is some other plan, I am coming to the conclusion it is not viable - a shame - a pretty little boat.

transport companies

Sorry, cross over with your post - that is a good idea - I will ring round a few companies and see if it is possible.

Thanks

Re: road trailer

If you tow it, or have it towed, make sure the trailer wheel bearings have been greased because that's a hell of a long trip.

Get it transported. Their insurance covers it. You save a long day and possible mechanical (car or trailer) problems. It gives you the chance to shop around for your towbar.
Towing it yourself doesn't add up.
