Pal of mine recently had a problem with the final drive on his '39 and suspects this has extended to a bent propshaft. He believes that the shaft has to be removed within the hull and the engine may have to be moved off its bearers - all because the rudder is in the way.

All the vessels I have owned had the shaft slightly offset so it can be drawn out alongside the rudder.

Does anyone have experience of these vessels?

Hi,

Had a Challanger 35, Long keel, rudder hung directly across the prop'. The rudder had a cut out to allow access to the prop' and shaft.
New boat has a transom hung rudder and no cut out. Fortunatly with the transom hung rudder dropping it is OK.

I have always though that the Tradewinds were well thought out boats. Have you spoken to Tradewinds, or to the builders? They are not the same company. Some were built bu Mitchells in Poole and some by Blondecell in Lymington, now defunkt.

Sorry if not to much help.

Regards

i would thougtht that very unlikely. the 35 has no such trouble but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. There ought to be a shaft coupling (not a flange) astern of the g'box flange coupling which after removal allows the propshaft to move forwards and get the prop off quite easily.

Thanks Simon and Para

I knew about Blondcell, but not about Mitchells.

There is a coupling behind the gearbox and that shearing bolts was part of the recent problem. It seems that looking in this area was why the engine removal thoughts arose.

I will pass on your comments to the owner and maybe get a look myself.
