You're not alone. Here's recording of a symposium on 'Trad Nav' with rather a lot of expertise.

RIN Symposium

And I thought I knew my stuff! There's lots, lots and more lots.

Quite a lot of years ago I and my lady were invited by Jimmie Wharram to attend the launching of his famous 63' Polynesian double-canoe 'Spirit of Gaia' at Devoran. Actually, it was my lady he was more interested in!

The procedure involved a quasi-religious 'blessing' by several 'men of the cloth' - and rather more decorously by three comely young ladies from the Pacific Rim communities who invoked a Maori/Polynesian invocation on the boat. They wore blue wrap-around 'kilts' and garlands of leaves and flowers which had meanings specific to the ceremony. I was privileged to have a garland for my head, woven by one of the girls, and my own girlfriend later told me ( safely ) the cultural significance of that being presented to me, and my accepting and wearing it!

Whatever, the boat made its way into the Pacific.

He proved himself right - with the help of many comely young maidens, from various corners, over the years. And there's nowt wrong wi' that!
