To declare an interest one of them should have been the "Levi Triana 25"

Mind you tho' its great to see "Sonny" get four of his designs in the top 100:-

A' Speranziella at 93.
Virgin Atlantic Challenger II at 55.
Surfury at 38.
G.Whiz at 13.

What penmanship.

For me the missing one was Alto Volante - she should have been number one!

Also the British Military Powerboat Trust's HSL 102
Oh and definitley either a "Silver Leaf" or a "Silverette"
and a Cougar Osborne Enforcer 40 - with the optional .50" calibre machine guns!

Can't see how a LagoonPower 43 got on the list? S'pose it takes all sorts. Hmmm.

Re: Fleming

I agree Fleming 55 - Interesting that the 75 was in there at Number 3, I think they're on hull no. 6 or somewhere round there - only been making them a couple of years and the 55's been around since the mid 80's and on about hull 160 and not a mention.... You ignore the 55 in your regular monthly digest too...... (not that I'm biased or anything!)

For various reasons, not all logical:

1. Fairey Swordsman/Super Swordsman
2. Fairey Huntress
3. Fairey Huntsman 28 & 31, & Spearfish equally
6: Riva Aquarama
7:New Swordsman 40
8: Lochin 40
9: Mitchell 31
10: Channel Islands 22

Bill.

Probably the Riva Aquarama, but would have to put the Pershing 88 near the top, along with the Azimut 68S and the XS2000. And the Flemming 55. And a Revenger 27. And... and... and...

Why? Because they're very good at the things they're designed to do.

That would be to separate you from shedloads of cash, hopefully making a profit for the manufacturers then:)

Couldn't agree more. P32 was our starter boat - still excellent 25 years on and nothing new around to rival it on price v space. Know lots of peeps with Fairline Holidays - great little boats.

I had the same thought when reading this post, particularly as far as the Aquarama, the P88 and the XS2000 are concerned.
But we shouldn't forget that they are (were) not designed to separate ANYONE from shedloads of cash.
They're actually designed for people who just don't care about their cash, 'cause they have multiples of those shedloads.
Moving this cash from the pockets of these customers to the pockets of boatbuilders doesn't make any difference to mine.

Not quite true...I'm sure people who buy such things as Aquaramas/Pershing 88s care very much about their cash. They just happen to have a lot more of it than most of us. It's the same with flash cars or motorbikes...designed to be the best at what they do, and commensurately expensive.

Tom, you and your lot are in an envious position having tested mamny of the boats manufactured over the years. How can any of us come up with a list when we've probably only owned a few and praps been on a few mates boats. We probably all have a wish list based on looks and from what we've read from peeps like you.

Top of my list would be the big Aquastar, 70 odd foot, and one of the Flemings. Both proper seagoing boats with a huge range.

On the other end of the scale would be one from the Fletcher range and a Shetland, probably the 535, both of which have probably been responsible for more people starting boating than almost any other make of boat.

Mid range would be my favourites, the Channel Island 22 and 32 and anything from Seaward, along with Nelsons and any other Aquastars. And Humbers for their fit out.

Point taken. Rich people actually do care about their cash.
Quite often, this is one of the reasons why they cumulated a lot of it.
But let me insist: when signing a check for a P88, their behaviour is different - almost opposite, I'd dare to say.
Luxury boatbuilders are fully aware of that.
Look at their advertising: they don't even try to sell boats, what they pretend to sell is happiness.
Are those boats also the best at... something, strictly looking at them as boats and not as dreams?
Maybe yes, maybe not. But that is not relevant anyway, neither for the builders nor for the buyers.
All IMHO of course.

I think it can be very wrong to use ' designed to be the best' and 'commensurately expensive' as justification for each other, they are very much mutually exclusive look at the miles and miles of crap thats over priced and the many excellent things whose price is disproportionate to its quality, inflated prices for underdeveloped items is the hallmark for many many items-boats included.
